I was very happy to hear of both the release and success of the film Sound of Freedom. So much about this film and the response to it is remarkable. Sadly, I have only been able to see trailers and watch interviews with Tim Ballard and Jim Caviezel as I live and work in a remote community. Neverthel...

A little about beta-caryophyllene and its role in Bud Rub

By far one of the most asked questions I have had over the years is 'how much CBD is in the product'? The need to ask about CBD bordered on being a kind of collective Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and at times was a bit irksome to me. It wasn't always that way but during the years leading up to the....

After a long hiatus or not being able to post I am back and have written a new piece on the website.

My childhood and adolescence in Alberta in the 60s and 70s, a time when the establishment could fairly be called "conservative" or "right wing". These aren't terms I'm terribly fond of but nevertheless convey some conventional understanding of the character of the politics of the time. It was time w...

The contest to win the mask has wrapped up but the draw has been delayed. An unexpected trip has come up and the draw will be made when I return. The carver who made the mask will be going to Montreal to decommission the Residential School Totem Pole and I am traveling with him. I invite you to follow along on our journey across Canada beginning this Friday May 6. You can view photos and stories about our trip on Charles website.

This is the official home page for Charles Joseph Traditional Kwakiutl Art. View his art and get in touch to get a carving of your own.

The Bud Rub Story

Bud Rub was an idea that started somewhere around 1999 or 2000. Of course back then it was called BC Bud Rub. I was trying to make a lip balm that would work on cold sores. It did that, but it was easier to package it in small ointment jars at that time and, years later, some customers in a store in Ladysmith began using it for arthritis and getting great results. From then on, Bud Rub was sold as a remedy for aches and pains, and especially arthritis.

Around the same time I began experimenting with h**p essential oil as an active ingredient instead of the THC I was using up until that time. I found it was equally, if not more, effective in relieving pain and inflammation. I wanted people to embrace cannabis as a topical along side other natural health products. A place I thought it belonged. Using essential oil allowed me to sell a product that was salable in most retail settings. I felt it was important to normalize the presence of cannabis in a retail natural health product setting. I still think this needs plenty of work.

Currently we do not use H**p Essential Oil in our products. Health Canada placed heavier restrictions on h**p derived products after legalization of high THC cannabis. We always knew that Beta-caryophyllene (BCP) was the active ingredient in the h**p essential oil and now use BCP derived from organically grown clove.
