MJ is a longstanding member of The Athletic Bar community and has recently completed her certification in Sleep, Stress Management, & Recovery alongside her nutrition certification!

“I am a certified coach in Sleep, Stress Management & Recovery, as well as Nutrition, dedicated to supporting women in midlife. This stage of life brings powerful shifts—physically, emotionally, and mentally—but it can also be an incredible opportunity to finally put yourself first.

One of the biggest misconceptions in nutrition coaching is that fat loss should start with cutting calories immediately.

But many people come into coaching already undereating.
When that happens, the first step is often a reverse diet.
Instead of eating less, we slowly increase calories so the body can:

• Restore metabolic function
• Improve gym performance
• Build strength and muscle
• Support hormones and recovery

Once that foundation is built, fat loss becomes far more effective and sustainable.

This process is why most successful clients work with a coach for 3–6 months.

Because real transformation isn’t just about losing weight.
It’s about building a body that performs, recovers, and burns energy efficiently.

For this client, we intentionally increased calories to support a body recomposition goal. Over 30 days, she trained consistently, focused on real food and adequate intake, and allowed her body to recover and adapt.
