💗 February is Heart Health Month 💗

Your feet are farthest from your heart and rely on smaller blood vessels, which means changes in circulation can often show up there first.

Things like temperature changes, skin quality, comfort, or sensation in the feet can sometimes offer early clues about circulation and cardiovascular health. Taking notice of your foot health is one small but important part of understanding your overall well-being.

📖 This month’s newsletter dives deeper into heart health, circulation, and what your feet may reveal—be sure to check it out! https://allistonfootclinic.com/blog

❄️ Myth vs. Fact Friday! ❄️

Myth: Winter boots don’t need orthotics.

Fact: Your feet still need proper support in the winter! Custom orthotics can be used in many winter boots and can help reduce heel pain, plantar fasciitis, fatigue, and instability—especially when navigating icy, uneven surfaces.

Supportive feet = safer steps this winter. 🥾✨

❄️Understanding Raynaud’s Phenomenon:
Cold-Induced Colour Changes in Toes❄️

Raynaud’s Phenomenon occurs when the small blood vessels in your toes (and sometimes fingers) temporarily narrow in response to cold or stress.

This reduced blood flow can cause your toes to turn white or blue and feel numb or icy. As circulation returns, you might notice tingling, burning, or a shift from white ➝ blue ➝ red.

❄️ How to Reduce Flare-Ups
✨ Keep your feet warm
✨ Warm up slowly
✨ Avoid rapid temperature changes
✨ Stay active
✨ Manage stress
✨ Avoid smoking

❗ When to Seek Help ❗
If symptoms become painful, frequent, or interfere with daily life, a chiropodist can help assess circulation and suggest treatment options.

Winter & Peripheral Neuropathy ❄️

Noticing more burning, tingling, or numbness in your feet during winter? Cold temperatures can reduce circulation and increase nerve sensitivity, making neuropathy symptoms feel worse.

💡Ways to Manage Neuropathy Symptoms in the Cold
Keep feet warm (not hot), moisturize daily, stay active, wear supportive footwear, and check your feet regularly.

❗ When to Seek Help
If your pain increases, sensations change, or new numbness develops, a chiropodist can help assess nerve function, prevent complications, and recommend treatment options.

Many people jump into new routines too quickly at the start of the year. When activity levels increase suddenly, extra stress can be placed on the feet and lower body, sometimes leading to discomfort or setbacks.

Your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back work together to support movement. Easing into new activities helps support comfort, balance, and long-term consistency.

Start smart this year:
Build activity gradually 🕒
Choose supportive footwear 👟
Mix in low-impact movement 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️
Warm up, cool down, and allow recovery 🔄
Listen to your body—don’t push through pain ⚠️

If discomfort is holding you back or you’re unsure how to start safely, Alliston Foot & Orthotic Clinic is here to support your movement goals—so you can stay active with confidence.

As temperatures drop, our footwear gets heavier, warmer, and often less flexible. Here’s how to help your feet adjust comfortably.

🥾 Check Your Boot Fit
✨ Toe Room: Ensure a thumb’s width of space at the front
✨ Arch Support: Winter boots often lack built-in support — add orthotics or insoles if needed
✨ Ankle Stability: A snug, supportive ankle prevents rolling on icy surfaces
✨ Heel Fit: Your heel should stay secure without lifting

❄️ Don’t Forget Warmth Without Bulk: Choose boots with good insulation but still enough room for your toes to move. Thick socks shouldn’t make your boots tight.

❄️ Winter Skin Alert: Dry, Cracked Heels ❄️
Dry, cracked heels are common in colder months — and for some people, the skin can split or even bleed, making every step uncomfortable.

🦶 Why It Happens
Cold, dry winter air pulls moisture from the skin. Your heels carry a lot of pressure, so when the skin becomes dry and thick, it’s more likely to crack.

💧 How to Treat & Prevent Cracked Heels
✨ Moisturize daily with a urea-based cream (10–25%) — urea helps exfoliate and draw moisture into the skin, making it one of the best ingredients for repairing cracked heels.
✨ Apply cream at night and lock it in with socks.
✨ Avoid picking or over-filing, which can make cracks worse.
✨ Protect your feet with proper footwear and warm socks.
✨ Hydrate & consider a humidifier to combat dry indoor air.

❗ When to Seek Help
If cracks become deep, painful, or start to bleed, a chiropodist can safely treat the area, reduce thickened skin, and help prevent infection.
