It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Marilyn Joyce Carter, 79, of Fort Lawrence, NS. Marilyn passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the High Crest Nursing Home in Springhill.
Born in Sackville, NB, she was a daughter of the late Laurie and Annie (McPhee) Thompson.
Besides her jobs outside the home, Marilyn continuously worked beside her husband George on the Double "C" farm doing anything that was required. She also worked as the bookkeeper for George's Trucking business, George F. Carter Trucking and could be seen at any point in time going with equipment.
Marilyn was employed by the province of Nova Scotia for a number of years working at the Nova Scotia Tourist Bureau. For a few years she sold real estate for Century 21, and also served as a Cumberland County Councilor.
Marilyn was community minded and was an integral part of many organizations in various capacities, this began with the Fort Lawrence Women's Institute and included such organizations as the RCL # 10, the Amherst RCAF Cumberland Wing #105, the Amherst Lioness Club, the Chignecto Wagoneers, the Tourism Industry of Nova Scotia, the Federation of Agriculture, the Cumberland Trucker Association, and many more.
Marilyn's creativity included knitting, sewing, quilting, painting, and playing the guitar.
She had a strong determination which on one occasion left her on the roof of the house with no way down waiting for George to come home! Marilyn's strong will meant she never backed down from what she believed in, as many can attest to, and she was always up for a political debate.
Marilyn had an affection for animals, especially her horses, Bud and Princess, dog Minnow and a multitude of cats throughout the years. This affection often saw her turn the kitchen into a make shift nursery for ailing pigs, sheep and calves.
Marilyn was raised with music and in later years she could be seen pulling into Tim Horton's in her red Ford Truck, or red Mustang with country music playing.
She enjoyed a roaring game of 45's and the occasional gaming machine. Marilyn enjoyed curling throughout the Maritimes as a member of the Amherst Curling Club. She also spent some years as part of the Amherst Bowling league.
Marilyn faced many challenges in her life with these last few years being her most difficult.
She will be dearly missed by her daughter Dorothy Bennett (Carl Vance), Lower Five Islands; step grandchildren, Amber and Stephen; step great grandchildren Keilee, Brooke, Oliver, Georgia, Lucy, and Henry; sisters Carol Thompson, BC, Gail Tower, Sackville, NB, Brenda Matthews, Kamloops, BC; brothers Kenneth (Judy) Thompson, Frank (Lorraine) Thompson, Brian (Sharon) Thompson, Darrell (Michelle) Thompson, all of Prince George, BC.; sister in law, Edith Fisher and best neighbour Garnet Trenholm, who was thought to be an important part of this "Carter" household.
She was predeceased by her husband George F. Carter, brother Murray Thompson; sister Annie Laurie "Tootie" Thompson and mother and father in law Dorothy and Walter Carter.
Arrangements are under the care of Jones Family Funeral Centre, Amherst, NS, 902-667-8777. Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at the Fort Lawrence Cemetery at a later date.
