It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Ann Frances Hughes of Amherst, Nova Scotia, on Thursday, January 8, 2026 at the age of 84 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.

Born on August 17, 1941 in Horn Church, Essex, England. Ann was the only child of the late John A. Hughes and Annie L. Hughes.

Ann studied art in England and immigrated to Canada in the mid-1960's, where she taught elementary school in Halifax. She pursued her educational career as Curriculum Supervisor for the Municipality of Cumberland and later as Supervisor of Elementary Education for the Cumberland District School Board. As the same time, Ann upgraded her qualifications through night school to obtain her BA, BEd and MEd. She retired in 1994.

In her earlier years, Ann enjoyed curling, bowling, golf, and attending the Amherst Jr. A Rambler hockey games. She loved a challenge whether it be completing the weekly New York Times crossword puzzle or completing a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. She used her artistic talents in cross stitching and needlepoint. She was a prolific reader and appreciated fine music and art work.

Ann was a long term financial supporter of the local YMCA. She previously instructed a seniors' fitness program and valued the importance of personal fitness offered by the YMCA. As well, she was a 20 year member of the Cumberland Y Service Club.

Ann had a deep faith and attended mass regularly. She supported the work of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and more recently the Tuesday luncheons held at Holy Family Church.

Ann achieved at the highest level through careful planning, hard work, and a drive to succeed. She often downplayed her talents but those who knew her and worked with her knew otherwise. She valued being independent and private and only recently accepted any homecare aid offered.

Ann was a caring, reliable and faithful friend. She will be missed by her longtime companion, Garth Rayner, and his immediate family.

Special thanks to Dr. McCrossin for his medical care of Ann, to faithful friends: Betty Cochran, Mary Lynn Chapman, Vickie Chapman and Susan Gotell.

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Gerald W Freeman, 92 years, of West Amherst, NS, on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Highcrest Nursing Home, Springhill.

Born in Amherst, NS, he was a son of the late Demont and Vera (Wheaton) Freeman.

Gerald was raised on his family farm, Elmport Farm, in West Amherst. He was in the class of 1953 for a Bachelor of Science at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro. After college he initially worked for the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture then Oulton Dairy in Sackville, NB. Gerald then returned to West Amherst and took over the family farm. Sadly, in 1969 the Nova Scotia Department of Highways expropriated some of the farmland, and Gerald made the decision to move to the USA with Carolyn and the girls. Over the next several decades he worked on multiple dairy farms throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. He returned to West Amherst in 1988 and settled into the old farmhouse and became known for his vegetable stand and booth at the Amherst farmer's market. Gerald, as a Daco animal nutrition sales consultant, worked for many years with farmers across NS, NB and PEI.

Gerald had a very strong passion for the importance of agriculture to our community and a strong love and respect for both the land and livestock. His desire was to leave the land better than he found it. He spent most of his life involved in this industry and always felt his career in the cattle industry had made relationships with some of the best Holstein cattle and even humans in the industry.

Gerald enjoyed curling, milking Holstein cows, gardening, reading biographical books and ditching his marshland. He had many years of companionship with his dog Wimp and was a fan of Anne Murray and her music. He and Sheila especially enjoyed Blue Grass music and had a special friendship with the group Rustic Harmony of Sackville, NB.

In honour of Gerald’s younger years, we must mention the long standing story of Gerald, along with his good friends Donny Logan and Harold Lusby, riding the train to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in the same boxcar as the cattle. The tales are tall and the stories are long - We will never really know what happened on that trip, but many lifelong memories were created.

Gerald will be dearly missed by his daughters, Janet (Steve) Mittl of Essex Junction, Vermont and Pamela (Glenn) Brown of Agawam, Mass; Heather's partner Gregory Cruickshank, Amherst; grandchildren Keenan Mittl and Paige Mittl (fiancé Leif Flor), both of Salt Lake City, Utah and long time companion Sheila Nelson of Brookdale, NS as well as her children Kathy (John McLoughlin) McKenzie, Oromocto, NB; Bruce (Charlene) Nelson, Port Howe, NS; as well as his former wife Lu Freeman, Albany, NY.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his first wife Carolyn Freeman and daughter Heather Freeman.

Arrangements are under the care and supervision of Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst, NS (902-667-8777), where an Afternoon of Remembrance will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 from 2 to 4 pm.

Donations in Gerald's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 4-H Nova Scotia, or a charity of your choice.

Sharing of memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting the online memorial at www.jonesfamilyfuneralcentre.ca or through the Jones Family Funeral Centre page.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Beverley Patricia Giles, age 62, on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Beverley "Bev" was born in 1963 in Cole Harbour, NS to the late Russell and Madeline (Higgins) Giles.

Bev was smart, talented, and had a radiating smile that warmed everyone around her. Bev had this fire about her and when she set her mind to something she did it full force. In her younger years, she achieved diplomas in accounting, electrical engineering, a certificate in hairdressing and even opened a very successful delivery business (Go4u).

Bev had a colorful mind and took on many hobbies, always excelling at them. As a child, she taught herself to play the organ and ukulele. She was also an avid animal lover and always had her dogs by her side. Her dogs meant the world to her, (Kevin, Yoda, Madea, Chance, Jorja, Bertha, Russell and Pumpkin) and she would have done anything for them. Bev recently spent the summer building a goat barn and raising and breeding June, Ofred, Mackenzie, Hope, and Joy. She was the happiest being outside and caring for her goats.

Bev was one of the most hardworking women you could ever meet; building a life and home from the ground up and raising three beautiful and independent daughters. Bev had this uncanny way of drawing people in with her no-bullsh*t attitude and her ability to reach and care for the people she loved. She was fierce and passed that trait along to her daughters.

Near the end, Bev was fighting her own demons. Mental health is a silent, agonizing disease and Bev fought it until the very end. Her only hope for those she cared for is for them to love each other and to build a life they are happy and proud of.

Bev was predeceased by her bestie Blake and leaves behind her special and loved neighbours Maddi, Dax, and Adam.

She is survived by her sisters Chris and Donna; her 4 beautiful daughters Deb, Josie, Raylene and Robyn; many nieces, nephews and cousins; her grandkids, Naethon, Dallus, Alivia, Jayden, and Lincoln.

With Bev's passing, she met with her brother David, parents Madeline and Russell whom passed before her and of course Blake.

Arrangements are under the care and supervision of Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). To honor Bev's wishes, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of life will be arranged and details will be released by the family.

Those wishing to make a donation in Beverley's memory may do so to a charity of your choice.

Sharing of memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting the online memorial at www.jonesfamilyfuneralcentre.ca or through the Jones Family Funeral Centre page.
