There were lots of smiles at Ivey's Terrace Nursing Home yesterday during the very first Walks in Care session!

This new weekly program grew from our residents' participation in Nova Scotia Health and Trenton Parks & Recreation's Walk n' Roll program next door at the rink, which runs from May through October. Seeing the impact of those walks, Walk n' Roll leaders, Emily and Heather, connected with Catherine from Hike Nova Scotia to explore how something similar could continue in-house at Ivey's Terrace.

With support from local volunteers, including members of the Walkie Talkies walking group, Walks in Care now pairs residents with trained volunteer walking partners each week for friendly, purposeful walks.

We're grateful to our community partners, the Alzheimer Society, and the volunteers who received training to help make this program safe, meaningful, and fun for our residents.

💚 NS Walking in Care – A Community Partnership in Motion 💚

Over the past few months, the Town of Trenton Recreation Department has been working in partnership with Catherine Droesbeck from Hike Nova Scotia/ Walk NS and Ivy’s Terrace Nursing Home to bring a special walking program to life, Walking in Care.

With the support of our incredible volunteers and members of our local outdoor walking group, Walkie Talkies, we’ve created an in-house walking program at Ivy’s Terrace that pairs residents with trained volunteers for friendly, purposeful indoor walks.

Thanks to the support of Ivy’s Terrace, Hike NS / NS Walks, and the Alzheimer Society, volunteers received education and training to ensure they feel confident, supported, and prepared to walk alongside residents in a safe and meaningful way.

✨ Training is now complete, and we’re excited to facilitate our first official walk next week! ✨
