We’re proud to share that Dr. Pil Joo, one of our exceptional ARH physicians, is a co-author of a new article in Canadian Family Physician on anaplasmosis, a lesser-known but increasingly important tick-borne illness in Canada.

🦠 What is anaplasmosis?

Also known as human granulocytic anaplasmosis, this infection is carried by the same ticks that transmit Lyme disease. As tick populations expand with climate change, cases are rising across the country, including here in Ontario.

Why clinicians should pay attention:

➡️It often presents as a nonspecific fever (no obvious rash).
➡️Common lab clues include leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and mildly elevated liver enzymes.
➡️When patients present with fever of unknown origin, anaplasmosis should be part of the differential.

Early recognition and treatment can reduce complications, making awareness essential for primary care and hospital clinicians.

👏 We congratulate Dr. Joo for contributing to this important national clinical guidance and for helping improve awareness across the healthcare community.

The Real Heroes Don’t Wear Capes

Some heroes don’t wear capes — they wear scrubs and smiles! 💚

This Halloween, we’re celebrating two of our amazing Arnprior Regional Health staff members, Micheline H. and Claire M., who recently received Angel Pins for their kindness, compassion, and dedication to patients.

They remind us that true heroes walk among us every day — caring for others and making a difference close to home.

Our deepest thanks to the Circle of Turtle Lodge for leading us in a smudging ceremony and sacred to***co vigil at both the Grove Home and the Hospital in honour of the children who never returned home from residential schools, and in support of Survivors, their families, and communities.

Your guidance created a space for reflection, healing, and remembrance. Together, we continue to walk the path of truth and reconciliation. 🕯️🧡

ARH invites members of the community to a vigil - including a smudging ceremony and to***co offering - hosted by the Circle of Turtle Lodge to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, as well as Survivors, their families, and communities.

🔶 September 29, 2025 🔶
11:00 am: The Grove Home Courtyard
1:00pm: The Hospital (courtyard by Entrance D)

For more than a century, residential schools forcibly separated over 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children from their families and communities. Many children were denied food, care, and safety. They were stripped of language, culture, and identity. Some never made it home.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has since confirmed what Survivors have long told us: that the residential school system was an act of cultural genocide, leaving a legacy of trauma that continues to affect generations.

It is only through listening, learning, and acknowledging this painful history that we can walk the path of reconciliation together. This vigil is an opportunity for reflection, solidarity, and remembrance.

We encourage everyone to wear orange and attend as we pause to remember, reflect, and recommit to creating a future rooted in respect, healing, and reconciliation.

Thank you for joining us in this important moment of remembrance.
