INTENT

It took me some extra time to think through "my word" for 2024.  I almost wanted to pick the same words I had from either 2022 or 2023 because, frankly, I'm not done with them. I feel like I'm just getting started!

When you know, you know, and I've landed on the word, Intent, as my word for 2024.

- To be intentional with how I spend my time and who I spend it with. (Hello to putting down the phone and really being present with those around me).

- To be intentional with opportunities I take on and the ones that I do not.

- To be intentional with my parenting and the way I show up in my home for my kids and my partner.

- To be intentional with my nutrition and the ways  I choose to prioritize movement in line with my future goals.

Did you pick a word for 2024? What is it?

Health trends!
This week, I was interviewed by a national magazine on "health trends" to watch for in the coming year, and I'm not sure they got the responses they were expecting.
Here's the problem with health trends. When something is a trend, it implies that it is something that will come and go.

Sometimes, things can start at trends, then stick around and shift the way we think about health ongoing. For example, I expect we'll continue to see conversations about perimenopause deepen over the next year. It's not just a trend!
Sometimes, things that are trendy are just distractions away from the focus on what really matters with your health. (Ie. Remember green coffee bean extract? Lol)
How do you feel about health trends? What are some your favourites that have come and gone?

Nothing frustrates me more than having a new patient come in who has been taking an iron supplement for her whole life without any follow-up on if her iron levels are actually improving , simply the recommendation to "keep taking iron" at her yearly physical. 🤦‍♀️
Hint, hint,👉 if they're not improving, your iron supplements may not be working well for you, or we need to address your heavy menstrual bleeding or digestion to understand WHY.
If you're taking iron, this is your reminder to book you bloodwork appointment or check in with your health care provider.
In Ontario, naturopathic doctors can order bloodwork to help with assessment and monitoring of many conditions, including iron deficiency.

It's an exciting time to be a menopause focused practitioner seeing what you're passionate about supporting making headline news.
The decision to use a natural supplement to improve your perimenopausal symptoms can be a great strategy as well, but it may only help with the one symptom it's intended to help with.

VS.

Menopausal Hormone Therapy can be used to treat your symptoms of concern (ie. hot flashes), and also give you other side benefits like prevention of osteoporosis (and others).
👎👍Now for the bad news/ good news.
.
👎The bad news: many family physicians do not have proper training on how to support women with the conversation about the potential pros and potential cons of hormone therapy.
Gynecologists with menopause focus can be a great option, BUT in Ontario, these physicians are truly expert surgeons/ advanced diagnosticians and no one should need to wait 6-12 months (or more), to talk about managing their menopause symptoms based on long referral wait times.
To top it all off, it's no surprise our system is burnt out and this is simply not a conversation that can happen in a 5-7 minute appointment.
.
👍The good news: naturopathic doctors with prescribing authority/ NAMS certification have the training, the knowledge, skill and judgement to have these talks and work to support the best needs of the patient.
