This one is mostly for “my dancers” but it applies for all athletes. It’s also not chiropractic related, it’s just from me as a mom and former competitor.

Harley came out of one of her dance classes last week and she was a bit sad and frustrated and she said “I don’t know why but I wasn’t very good today”. So we had a conversation that we’ve had before but she didn’t remember. We talked about the rule of thirds. This is not my rule, I didn’t make it up (Olympic athlete Alexi Pappas has spoken and written about it). I heard it once and it stuck with me so I like to pass it on. I told her “good! Then you’re right where you should be! If you were doing your best work every day I would know you weren’t pushing yourself hard enough!” And then I reminded her that the rule of thirds is that you should be average 1/3 of the time, struggling a bit 1/3 of the time, and crushing it 1/3 of the time. Then you know you’re pushing yourself to be better!
Today we were talking about her competition yesterday and the stuff she felt like she improved on and she said “I think yesterday was my really good third!”
So on the days you’re not your best, you’re not even your average, remember, you should be struggling sometimes! That’s how you know you’re pushing yourself to improve ❤️ Good luck today if you’re still competing!

Competition # 1 is complete for this girl! I was out of the office today doing dance mom things but I am in on Saturday! Thank you to teachers and dancers who supported these kids today and everyday. “Mommy, the loudest cheers come from backstage” Harley told me today ❤️.

Hello friends!
As we get back into competitive season for many athletes, I wanted to highlight something that came up in a discussion between myself and the amazing Amanda (RMT and athletic therapist).
We were talking about muscle tightness and muscles that feel chronically tight. We were talking about me because I finally decided to get some much needed treatment 🫠. I found myself saying what I hear patients say all the time, “I stretch it but I can’t seem to loosen it up”. Amanda, being oh so wise, reminded me that “stretching is a bandaid for tightness”. And I realized I was thinking like a patient and not a doctor 🤦‍♀️.

Let me explain what she meant. Stretching tight muscles may get you some relief and range of motion in the short term, but tight muscles are almost always the result of a muscle imbalance and are usually weak relative to their surrounding muscles. So when she says stretching is a bandaid, she doesn’t mean it’s bad, she just means it’s not the cure. Often, targeted strength training of the tight/weak muscle is what will ultimately sort it out.

And so here I am reminding you, if you have a muscle that is tight no matter how much you stretch, it’s probably weak!
