Did you know that there are four main physiological trauma responses associated with complex PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)?
The holidays can be a very challenging time for people. Expectations, demands, lack of self care, the hustle bustle, increased alcohol and substance consumption, isolation, depression, loss and grief can be major contributors to challenges many people face over the holidays. These challenges can trigger responses from C-PTSD. Boundaries, self care and professional support are crucial this time of year.
Here is a bit more information about the four main trauma responses.
Fight - The fight response is an automatic physiological response to stress or fright. The body automatically prepares to fight and protect itseìlf which releases adrenaline and creates a state of fear or intense stress.
Flight - The flight response is very similar to the fight response in how it affects the body physiologically but rather than prepare to fight, this response activates a flight response which means to run, avoid, isolate, hide or deflect.
Freeze - The freeze response takes place when our brain decides we cannot take the threat or we are not able to escape. We become frozen in fear. Many people disassociate during this response.
Fawn - The fawn response involves people pleasing to the degree that an individual disconnects from their own emotions and needs. As a result, they turn their negative feelings toward themselves in the form of self-criticism, self-harm, self-loathing and often turn to self sabotaging behaviours.
