Today we celebrate International Dyslexia Awareness Day!

Dyslexia is a hereditary disability that makes it difficult to read, write, and spell.

At Smith Psychological, our registered Psychologist can assess and diagnosis dyslexia. Early identification and intervention can help individuals learn strategies and tools to support their ability to read, write and spell.

Autism Spectrum Disorder, or autism, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts brain development. The result is that most individuals experience communication problems, difficulty with social interactions and a tendency to repeat specific patterns of behaviours. They may also have a restricted range of activities and interests.

Smith Psychological's Childhood Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment is designed for children the age of 6 years old and up. This highly specialized assessment process, can identify a child's areas of deficit and ability, obtain the proper diagnosis, and recommend the most effective intervention plan.

You don’t need a “new you” to face the year ahead. You need a supportive space to explore your challenges, build resilience, and find your way forward. Therapy can be that space.

In therapy, we don’t pretend challenges disappear; we face them head-on. Whether you’re struggling with past wounds, navigating complex relationships, or feeling the crushing weight of burnout, therapy offers:

- Validation: A space to name and acknowledge what’s hard without judgment or the pressure to fix it immediately.
- Perspective: Tools to reframe unhelpful patterns and recognize what’s within your control.
- Growth: Small, intentional steps toward the life you want, not the one social media says you should have.

We’re here to help. Reach out to learn more about our services and how we can support you.

The holiday season is meant to be a time of joy, celebration and for spending time with those we love. However, sometimes festivities can come with higher expectations that many of us struggle to live up to. Below are some tips for mentally healthy holiday.

Tips:

- Remember what the holiday season is about for you. Make that your priority.
- Identify your holiday triggers. Knowing your own unique holiday triggers helps to curb emotional reactivity and for putting plans in place to reduce holiday-related stress.
- Give yourself permission to feel your emotions.
- Connection is key. Find ways to spend the holidays with other people.
- Talk with a mental health professional. Sometimes our own efforts to improve our emotional health around this time of year are not as effective as we had hoped. When this happens it’s important to give yourself permission to ask for help.
