Hey mama!👋
Let's talk a bit about cesarean sections〰️.
Physiotherapists specialize in post surgery rehab and cesarean section is no different. It is actually the most common surgery performed in Canada.
C-section is considered a major, open abdominal surgery.
If you had a c-section you probably know that it isn't "the easy way out" as many may thoughtlessly call it.
Therefore, appropriate rehab (and prehab!) is very important for optimal return to daily activities (such as caring for your newborn) and goals like return to sports for example.

Many moms ask me whether pelvic floor physiotherapy is even needed after a c-section?
The short answer is...YES!
Now the long answer...
Why? Well, first of all you've been carrying your baby for 9 months, your pelvic floor muscles are still going through all things pregnancy - pressure on the pelvic floor muscles from the weight of your baby, constipation, anxiety, belly muscles stretching etc...this may lead to pelvic floor dysfunction.
Yes, the risk of developing pelvic floor issues after a c-section is lower than after a vaginal delivery, but there IS still a risk of urinary incontinence, prolapse, pain and more. For instance, after c-section you may have hypertonic (tight and therefore weak) pelvic floor muscles - which in turn can lead to incontinence.
Physiotherapists with special training can help you prior and post surgery.
How?
- Education as well as some tips and tricks to make your recovery faster
- Early post operative care
- Pain management
- Tips for toileting (routines, posture etc...)
- Breastfeeding posture tips to help with pain
- Safe return to mobility and exercise - abs, pelvic floor muscles, glutes, back, chest, arms are all very important!
- Working on your c-section scar mobility/sensitivity
and much much more!
