How would you define trauma? 🤔💭
When we think of trauma, our minds may go to motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, or violence. But trauma is less about the experience itself and more about how we perceive it.
For example, experiencing a break up, getting bullied, having overly critical parents, going through a divorce, experiencing racism and/or discrimination, experiencing food insecurity, and being cheated on, are all examples of trauma.
This being said, not everyone reacts the same and what is distressing for one person may not be distressing for another. How we perceive an experience depends on a number of internal and external factors. Relating to feelings, rather than the situation or the event itself, can sometimes help us hold space for others.
