Growing up, I heard the old wives tale: the further back your thumb can bend, the more money you like to spend.

Yesterday, while watching the hand hypermobility mast class, I learned 7 signs of hypermobility in the hands in 6 minutes.

Sign number 5 shows hypermobility, specifically in the IP joint of the thumb.

So my thumb bend hand has nothing to do with how much money I like to spend and everything to do with how hypermobile that joint is in my thumb.

Learning how to assess hypermobility in the hands is very important. The Beighton score tests only your thumb and pinky finger. I've now learned hypermobility can present slightly differently in each joint of the fingers and thumbs.

For reference in the second slide the two bottom pictures are my thumbs

As a Registered Massage Therapist, I have your back, your arms, your legs, your neck, your shoulders, your hands, and your feet.

Yes, I can massage all of those areas.
In a clinic setting, I tend to focus each massage therapy appointment on the areas that you need it the most.

The area of focus can also change depending on what your body needs the day of your appointment.

Before each massage therapy appointment, we always discuss what areas will be worked on before beginning the massage.

If your body needs something different than normal, we can adjust the treatment focus for that appointment, no problem.

For the week of Monday, November 10th to Friday, November 14th, there are a few massage therapy appointments available.

Tuesday, November 11th, at 3 pm

Wednesday, November 12th, 10 am, and 3:30 pm

Thursday, November 13th, 3 pm for 90 min or 3:30 pm for 60 min

Meet your body where it's at.

It is a simple theory, but oh, so important when it comes to returning back to fitness, sport, or other activities after an injury.

Last week, a patient who is beginning to return back to movement and mobility training expressed how they should be able to do more and lift more without the significant amount of pain they felt, after just one 60 minute class.

You see, this patient was injured 7 years ago and still feels chronic discomfort as a result of that injury today.

The patient has and continues to do various types of treatments to manage this discomfort, but is struggling with wanting to do what an average 40 year old should do vs. what they are able to do in this moment.

I get it wanting to do more is great. However, forcing your body to do something it's not ready for doesn't help the healing process.

Meeting your body where it's at in this moment, without judgment or comparison to what the average 40 year old should do, is your best way forward.

How that might look may be different. One movement and mobility class may be challenging in this moment, and that's OK. It simply is just this moment. Allowing for your body to show up as it is in this injured recovery phase and meeting your body in this phase without judgment or comparison is so powerful. Celebrate the small win of showing up to the class, of doing it to the best of your current bodies ability, and see what next week brings.

Acceptance for your now body will help you throughout your recovery process

Yesterday, while working with a patient who is experiencing significant pain in his shoulder, I was reminded of the notion that your muscles need rest.

When pain is present, I know we all want to have it gone as quickly as possible, so we massage it, stretch it, and do whatever we can to find some relief.

I get it. Being in pain is taxing mentally and physically, and within that, our muscles still need rest.

Many times, patients have mentioned that they would love to get a massage every day, and while the idea is great, there should be at least 48 hours between appointments to allow for your body to rebalance itself.

Rest days are also very important during strength training to help with muscle recovery and prevent injuries from developing.

Yoga is another great practice to help with flexibility, strength, and reducing stress, and to start, the recommended frequency would be 2 to 3 times per week.

Did you know it can take 48 hours for your muscles to rebalance themselves after
