Let's talk about thyroid medication. As someone who has had hypothyroidism for over 20 years and treats numerous thyroid patients a day, I am pretty passionate about this issue.
Conventional thyroid medication (Synthroid or levothyroxine) is a synthetic form of an inactive thyroid hormone called T4. In order for t4 to do anything in the body, it has to be converted to t3 (gotta cleave an iodine molecule if you wanna get sciencey). Because hypothyroid patients are metabolically challenged, many are unable to effectively convert this hormone and as a result, do not feel better symptomatically, despite blood work "improving". There is a t3 medication called Cytomel which should be given along side the t4 medication if conversion isn't happening but in over 20 years of practice, I've seen that happen twice.
Some NDs (including moi) are able to prescribe a t4/t3 combination (still from a pharmacy, still covered by your drug plan) that, in my humble opinion, makes a HUGE difference in hypothyroid symptoms.
If you are medicated but not feeling an improvement in your symptoms, dessicated thyroid might be something to consider.
