As tempting as they are, Q-tips often push wax deeper into the ear canal, increasing the risk of impaction, irritation, and even infection.

Your ears are actually designed to clean themselves naturally. Most of the time, wax slowly migrates outward on its own so there is absolutely no digging required.

Instead, here’s what I recommend:
β€’ A gentle saline spray to keep the canal comfortable
β€’ A warm compress if there’s pressure or discomfort
β€’ Letting your ears do what they’re meant to do
β€’ And when wax truly builds up, having it removed safely by a professional

Ear health is about working with your body, not against it.
If you’re experiencing fullness, pain, hearing changes, or recurring blockages, that’s your cue to have it checked properly.

Your ears deserve the same care and respect as the rest of your health 🀍

As the temperature drops, many of us spend more time indoors and the combination of cold weather outside and dry heating inside can take a real toll on the nose and sinuses. One of the simplest ways to protect your airway health in winter is to keep your nasal passages moisturized.

Dry nasal lining is more prone to irritation, congestion, and even nosebleeds. A gentle saline spray or nasal gel can help restore moisture, support your natural defenses, and make breathing feel clearer and more comfortable all season long.

If you’re noticing persistent congestion, recurring sinus issues, or breathing changes this winter, I’m here to help.

As an ENT specialist, I see this more often than many expect: hearing loss can be incredibly subtle, and many Canadians over 40 don’t realize it’s happening until it begins affecting their daily interactions, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Hearing changes rarely appear overnight. They tend to progress slowly, which means your brain adapts without you noticing. You might find yourself turning up the volume a little higher, asking people to repeat themselves, or avoiding noisy environments because conversations feel harder to follow. These early signs are easy to dismiss, but they’re important cues your ears are giving you.

The good news: early evaluation can make a meaningful difference. Whether it’s monitoring changes over time or discussing treatment options, proactive care empowers you to stay connected to conversations, to loved ones, and to the moments that matter.

If you’ve been wondering about your hearing, or if subtle changes are starting to feel noticeable, I’m here to help.

Did you know that many Canadians over 40 are already experiencing hearing loss without realizing it?

As we age, the tiny sensory cells in the inner ear (called hair cells) naturally begin to break down. These cells are responsible for converting sound vibrations into signals our brain can process and once they’re damaged, they don’t regenerate. That’s why gradual hearing loss is so common as we get older.

Some early signs to watch for include:
βœ”οΈ Difficulty following conversations in busy or noisy environments
βœ”οΈ Needing to turn up the TV or radio louder than others prefer
βœ”οΈ Frequently asking people to repeat themselves

I recommend having your hearing checked at least every 2–3 years after age 40, or sooner if you’ve noticed any changes. Early detection not only helps protect your hearing but can also make a big difference in your overall quality of life.

Sometimes the smallest gestures carry the most meaning.

A patient recently thanked me with a bouquet of flowers, and while I never expect gifts of any kind, it was a touching reminder of why this work matters.

In ENT care, we focus heavily on diagnostics, evidence-based decision-making, and surgical precision - and rightly so. But moments like this underline something equally important: how a patient feels throughout their health journey. Feeling heard, supported, and cared for can shape their entire experience.

I’m grateful every day for the trust patients place in me. It’s a privilege to be part of their care, and gestures like this simply reinforce that responsibility and honour.

As an ENT, one common question I get is: β€œCan my earbuds actually cause ear problems?”
The short answer is yes, and it’s more common than most people realize.

When earbuds sit in your ear for long periods, bacteria can build up quickly. Add in sweat, moisture, and friction from frequent use, and you have the perfect environment for irritation and infection. This can lead to symptoms like itchiness, fullness, discomfort, or even recurring ear infections.

If your ears have been feeling irritated or painful - or if you’re dealing with symptoms that just won’t go away - it’s worth getting them properly assessed.

If you live in the North York / Vaughan area (or are able to commute there) and would like to see me, please speak with your family physician or nurse practitioner to request a referral. I’d be happy to help you get to the bottom of what’s going on and support your ear health moving forward. πŸ‘‚

As temperatures drop, many people notice an increase in sinus pressure, congestion, dry throats, and that β€œstuffy head” feeling that winter air seems to bring. Cold, dry conditions draw moisture out of the nasal passages and throat, making them more prone to irritation and inflammation.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
One simple tool I often recommend is using a cool-mist humidifier in your bedroom at night. Adding moisture back into the air helps soothe irritated sinuses, reduce dryness, lessen morning congestion, and support easier breathing overnight. It can also improve overall sleep quality β€” something many people notice as soon as they start using one consistently.

If you’re experiencing persistent congestion, ongoing sinus pressure, frequent post-nasal drip, chronic sore throats, or difficulty breathing through your nose this season, it may be a sign that your ENT health needs a closer look. I’m always here to help you understand what’s normal, what’s not, and how to support your airway health throughout the winter months.
