On connection vs. addiction:

Connection is often described as the opposite of addiction because healing rarely happens in isolation; it happens in relationship. We steady ourselves through the presence of others, especially when, as one writer put it, “Some need many voices from without helping them to contradict the many voices from within.” Recovery flourishes in shared space where we’re reminded that we’re not alone, and where we can learn from others' stories.

Connection isn’t only outward—it’s inward and upward too. Many people find strength in returning to their spiritual center, that quiet place where, as the mystics say, the soul remembers what the mind forgets. When we reconnect with ourselves, our community and the universe, we rediscover meaning and direction.

Ultimately, connection comes full circle when it moves through us into action. We heal most deeply when we turn outward and become of service, offering to others the same compassion, presence, and hope that once helped us find our way.

So, reach out! We're always ready to connect with you or help you find meaningful connections in your area.

Don't be a stranger!

Navigating Intimacy in Early Sobriety

As we embark on our recovery journey, we often find ourselves grappling with a complex web of emotions and relationship dynamics that we used to manage with our old tools - escape/repression using substances.

5. Emotional Rawness: Without the numbing effect of substances, emotions can feel overwhelming. "The best part of getting sober is getting your feelings back... The worst part is also getting your feelings back."

4. Unprocessed emotional trauma: Past behaviors or experiences during active addiction may have eroded trust in existing relationships or faith in forming new ones. Taking time to work through why we feel the way we feel is important.

3. Relearning Physical Intimacy: Many find that they've relied on substances to feel comfortable with physical closeness. Relearning how to be intimate without this crutch can be daunting and uncomfortable, to say the least.

2. Avoiding Replacement Addictions: There's a risk of replacing substance addiction with s*x or love addiction, making it crucial to approach intimacy mindfully. An unhealthy codependency will stunt your personal growth the same as any other addiction.

1. Self-Discovery: Early recovery is a time of profound self-reflection. This process can lead to changes in desires, boundaries, and relationship needs. If your goal is to reconnect with your true self and stay sober, a good start would be to spend some time alone with the person you want to become and get to know who you are.

Love is a powerful thing. Use it wisely.

Stop chasing what feels good today

and start building what lasts forever.

Temporary pleasure will always whisper louder

than purpose

— but it will leave you empty.

Real men don’t live for attention,

validation,

or escape.

We live for vision,

discipline,

and legacy.

Choose direction over distraction.

Build the life most people are too afraid to fight for.

Good morning!

Sometimes to find peace, we have to shrink our world.

The "big picture" view of life can often be overwhelming. When we get stuck dwelling on the past or the future, or work or other people, places or things, it is in our nature to try to plan everything out.

Though having a master plan for recovery may seem like a wise idea, the best thing to have is a PROGRAM.

Plans tend to go awry. When things outside our control disrupt those plans, we can feel like we aren't making progress.

The difference between a plan and a program, is that a program is a lifestyle that comes with tools you can apply whether things are going your way or not.

That brings us back to shrinking our world. Living with a program means we don't need to make plans for every potential situation, person, place or thing that we may come across in our day-to-day lives. It means we can take things as they come, allowing us to stay focused on the present.

In other words, when life seems too big, focus on the little things.

As always, if even the little things are too much, reach out. You are not alone.

Have a great Wednesday.

It's always worse by a significant magnitude. Know what, though?

Recovery the second time is better by an even greater magnitude.

You did it once. You can do it again. You're just overthinking it and doing that thing where you call yourself garbage so you can justify treating yourself like garbage.

Tough break for you though, because you're not garbage and you know it. Pity party totally ruined. Bummer. Now you have to get back to work.

What did you learn the first time around?

Would you be willing to share some notes with us that might help someone else, so that as a group, we don't keep repeating the same mistakes?

Big hug. Come on. You got this.

Good morning and Happy Thursday!

Whatever it is I am taking on today, I will take it on mindfully and approach it with love and good intent.

I will ACT, not REACT. I will hold space for myself and, if I can, for others to take their time to do the same.

I will do my best to be the person I need most.

I wish you all the strength to do the same.

You got this. One day at a time.

Good morning!

Rise and shine, the moon is landing at YUL!

I wish you all a day as bright and full as the moon above, bursting with purpose, connection and love.

Hey, that rhymes!

Have a good one, folks. Appreciate the quiet moments between thoughts.

Good morning!

Thank you for showing up for yourself this morning.

It's not uncommon in recovery to discover a newfound empathy for others, especially for other people who are on a recovery journey of their own.

We begin to approach our interactions with people from a place of love and understanding. We find ourselves willing and able to to listen, to offer as much encouragement as we can and to hold space for them to grow. We become beacons of light, a rock in a storm, in short, a friend.

Yet just as often, in our own journey, we continue to be insufferably hard on ourselves. We set unrealistic expectations, we judge our progress and we take our own brutal criticism to heart. We self-sabotage.

That's not very friendly...

Sometimes in life, things will just "click". We will recognize the pattern and clue into a behavioral change or "life hack" that will make our life easier.

So here's the hack: love yourself as you would a friend.

Once that clicks, peace will follow.

To quote my friend Nellie, "In recovery, we grow to become the person we needed most."

Keep showing up for yourself. You got this.

Good morning!

As the day begins, remember: recovery is not a path we walk alone.
Each step forward is strengthened by the understanding that we’re in this together.

If you're having a bummer of a morning, reach out. If you're bursting with energy, reach out and give someone else a boost. Small gestures keep us connected.

None of us are helpless. None of us are alone.

May today bring you moments of connection, courage, and kindness—both to yourself and to others walking this road beside you.

Stay in touch.

Good morning!

Freedom is a wonderful thing. Freedom to choose, Freedom to follow your dreams, Freedom to live and to love and to grow and to prosper.

We temporarily give up our freedom while in active addiction. We may be "functional" and think we are making a decent show of things, but our priorities have been hijacked. We are only free so long as we have what we think we need close at hand... and we know it.

I am grateful for every morning I wake up sober and truly free.

You can be too, and you know it.

Reach out.
