Loved ones often think that we need to protect with dementia under the responsibilities of a Power of Attorney. Protection is just one of the elements when we are supporting a loved one with dementia - we also have to be sure that our loved one is receiving all of the benefits that they are entitled to.

The family of an Ottawa man who has dementia says he's owed nearly $20,000 in Old Age Security payments he never received because his illness prevented him from filing the correct paperwork.

I often get the following question: what is the difference a power of attorney and a mandate of protection?
A: "A power of attorney gives a person of your choosing permission to perform certain acts on your behalf, such as pay bills, withdraw money, or sell your home. It does not need to be notarized, and you can put an end to it at any time.
The protection mandate is a document in which you name one or more people to take care of you and your property in the event you become incapable."

I am sharing this article as a reminder why I do the work that I do. The aunt was no longer able to work in concert with her nephew because of her dementia. He took advantage of her vulnerability. It is very important that people have their mandates homologated so that a thorough assessment can be done and that the vulnerable can be protected.

A man who robbed his elderly and vulnerable aunt has been sentenced by the Human Rights Tribunal of Quebec to pay her $236,000 in damages.

Mandy Novak-Leonard is a social worker and member of the Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec since 2008.
