Your mind does so much: juggling tasks, making decisions, and keeping you on track every day. But like your body, your brain needs breaks, too. When you start feeling foggy, irritable, or can’t focus, it’s a clear sign your mind needs a pause to reset.

Quick OT tips like deep breathing, shifting your focus, or stepping away for a moment can work wonders in helping you regain clarity and energy. The key is recognizing when to pause before burnout sets in.

Take it one step at a time: watch for signs your mind is asking for a break, and try to respond earlier each time. These small mental resets can make a big difference in your day.

Cleaning, gardening, and yard work are common spring activities, but they can also place strain on the body.

OT Tip:
Use joint protection and energy conservation strategies.

• Use tools with larger grips to reduce hand strain.
• Kneel on a pad or use a long-handled gardening stool.
• Lift with your legs rather than your back.
• Break tasks into smaller segments over several days.

These strategies help prevent overuse injuries and make activities more manageable.

Spring is the ideal time to get active outside again. Moving our bodies outside can help ignite a renewed energy within us. It can be tempting to jump right into yard work, gardening, or long walks. However, our bodies may not be fully conditioned for these activities yet.

OT Tip:
Start slowly and gradually increase your activity level.

• Begin with short walks to rebuild endurance. The physical movement, fresh air, and Vitamin D are good for the body and soul!
• Walk instead of drive wherever possible.
• Park farther away from your destination.

This approach helps reduce the risk of injury while allowing your body to rebuild strength and stamina.

Spring cleaning is not just about tidying up. Editing the things in the spaces around us can help reduce stress and re-spark a sense of lightness.

OT Tip:
Focus on creating spaces free of clutter. Include items in each space that create positive emotions.

• One space at a time, reassess the things in your home, car, and office.
• If something causes you unnecessary stress or is no longer used, it’s time for it to go!
• Move frequently used items to easy-to-reach locations.
• Organize the remaining items in each space for easy access.
• Check lighting in stairways and hallways. Maybe it’s time to change those lightbulbs.

Small environmental changes can make everyday tasks more efficient, safer, and more enjoyable.
