Found a little family history on our March Break.
1950 National Champion Colorado College Tigers included my Great Uncle Harry.

Always heard such wonderful things from my Grandma about great Uncle Harry , never got to meet but was happy to witness one of his many triumphs.

Ok seems everyone is catching on to my approach which I discuss in clinic.

99% of the questions asked to me will have an answer that relates to movement/exercise.

The idea here is about modifying intensity, volume, or the exercise /movement to a more tolerable level while you are recovering.

Rest and recovery is still important (when symptoms are exacerbated) but laying in bed for a week is not that helpful as your tissue capacity will also drop with little to no activity. So although you may feel less pain with only rest, you also may not tolerate your regular routine as well once you get back to it.

So the key here is to try and maintain tissue tolerance while recovering from an ache/pain or injury to be more prepared to return to activity.

I want you to think of a pro athlete here, they don’t go from the IR to game day without doing anything to build back up, they gradually increase their workload as they recover to prepare for the demands of their sport at a high level.

These are the type of conversations we have in clinic to help you feel more confident to move WITH pain to help assist your recovery and enhance personal confidence that it’s in your control.

Thank you to .doc for detecting my typo on my first post yesterday! Also give him a follow for great rehab content!

Ok this week has very similar theme to last week with sleep position.

I constantly hear from patients “I have horrible posture” and I quickly state there is no bad posture, BUT staying in a fixed position for an extended period of time MAY lead to discomfort.

I like these conversations in clinic simply because I am able to explain why I think muscle fatigue is the culprit in my opinion and therefore exercise / movement will help mitigate the uncomfortable feelings.

Sit to stand or stand to sit , pelvic tilts while seated , scap retraction , water / washroom breaks are some of the many ways to simply shift around to help.

So in closing this doesn’t mean one position is ideal over the other, more so that the thing attaching to bones and moving joints ( muscles) are tired and don’t want to keep upright anymore not misalignment of bones that need to be put back in place.

Thanks to all who had a look and a teaser for next week will have a baseball theme as Nolan Ryan’s longevity and approach to pain sync up with how I discuss pain management with patients.

As my patients have heard when they mention to me they slept wrong, I will simply state I don’t care how you sleep, SLEEP WINS.

Think of how little ones sleep, they are all over the place and wake up full of energy and no pain. The key here is there is no perfect sleep position only what works best for you to have a restful sleep.

Sleep positions or modifications can be used to help get comfortable if you’re going to bed uncomfortable, but don’t worry about how you sleep, just sleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

Now the argument can be made that I wake up sore so it must be how I slept. I would suggest thinking about incorporating a daily routine change, no matter how subtle it may be when you’re awake to help you sleep well and awake feeling comfortable.

So instead of thinking you did something bad for your body when asleep, think about what you can do to overcome the challenge when you’re awake.

Thanks to all whom participated, more to come to allow whomever wishes to see how I converse with my patients.
