October is Infant Loss Awareness Month

For many families, the grief of losing a baby, whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss, can feel invisible and isolating. This month is a time to remember, to speak the names of the little ones gone too soon, and to acknowledge the deep and lasting impact of that loss.

At Foundations Counselling, we understand that healing after infant loss is not about “moving on” but about finding ways to carry both love and grief together. Our counselling services provide a safe and compassionate space to process emotions, navigate relationships, and find gentle ways forward.

You do not have to face this alone. Support is available.

Sleep rituals help train your mind and body to rest, supporting emotional balance and mental clarity. By consistently preparing for sleep in a way that signals safety and calm, your brain can regulate mood, reduce anxiety, improve memory, and strengthen overall cognitive functioning. Over time, these intentional rituals can make a noticeable difference in mental health and well-being.

At Foundations Counselling, we help clients develop personalized sleep routines and use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) to support restorative sleep and improve mental health.

Sleep plays a crucial role in mental health. Poor sleep can lead to mood swings, increased anxiety, and depression, while also affecting cognitive functioning, memory, and overall mental clarity. Consistently getting restorative sleep helps regulate emotions, improve focus, and support long-term brain health.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) is an evidence-based approach that helps break the cycle of sleeplessness, teaching strategies to improve sleep quality and support mental well-being. Foundations Counselling can guide you in developing healthy sleep habits and using CBT-i techniques to strengthen your mental health. Reach out today for more information.

Reminder: Your body feels everything your mind thinks

Stressful thoughts can show up as headaches, tight shoulders, or an unsettled stomach. Hopeful, calming thoughts can create a sense of ease and relaxation.

When emotions aren’t processed, they don’t just disappear; they often settle into the body. That’s why learning to notice, name, and work through your feelings is so important for both mental and physical health.

At Foundations Counselling, we can help you understand this mind–body connection and guide you in processing emotions in a way that brings healing and balance.

Learning to Sit with Your Feelings

Many of us are quick to push feelings away, numbing, distracting, or ignoring them because sitting with them can feel uncomfortable. But feelings are messengers. They tell us what we need, what we value, and where healing may be needed.

You don’t have to avoid or fight your emotions. With support, you can learn to sit with them in a way that feels safe, empowering, and healing.

Shifting from a Negative to a Positive Mindset

The way we think shapes how we feel and respond to life’s challenges. A negative mindset often focuses on obstacles and limitations, while a positive mindset helps us see opportunities and strengths, even in difficult moments.

Choosing a positive mindset doesn’t mean ignoring difficulties; it means facing them with resilience and hope. With practice, these small shifts in thinking can reduce stress, build confidence, and create more space for growth.

If you’re struggling to break free from negative thought patterns, counselling can help you explore new perspectives and develop tools for lasting change.

Healing Looks Different Every Day

Some days, healing means doing the hard work; showing up for therapy, setting boundaries, having tough conversations, or practicing new coping skills.

Other days, healing means giving yourself permission to rest; taking a nap, going for a walk, or simply allowing yourself to pause.

Both are valid. Both are healing.

At Foundations Counselling, we walk alongside you through the work and the rest, supporting your unique journey toward balance and well-being.

The vagus nerve plays a significant role in maintaining bodily balance, regulating heart rate, digestion, breathing, and the “rest and digest” response.

When it becomes dysregulated due to stress, trauma, poor sleep, or other challenges, you may feel anxious, exhausted, or out of balance.

The good news? With the right tools and support, you can help your nervous system regain calm.
