🎄 Stress & Self-Care Before the Holidays 🎄

The holidays bring joy, but they can also bring stress due to busy schedules, family expectations, gift pressure, travel, and changes in routine. According to Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, over half of people find this time of year experience feelings of anxiety, loneliness and “holding it all together.”

🧘 Mindful Tips to Help You Through This Season

- Accept imperfection. It is okay if everything isn’t perfect — striving for “magazine-perfect” celebrations can add unnecessary stress.
- Focus on what really matters. When you are overwhelmed (with lineups, late nights, and holiday tasks), pause and ask: “Is this going to matter in the big picture?” This helps shift stress into perspective.
- Respond with kindness to yourself and others. If things get tense, take a few deep breaths. A little compassion goes a long way.
- Set realistic boundaries. It is okay to say “no,” limit your obligations, take breaks, or choose simpler traditions. According to Ontario Shores, self-care during the holidays means acknowledging your emotional limits.

Make sure you block off 10-15 minutes in your schedule just for you. You might:
- Take a slow walk outside (fresh air and movement help stress).
- Sip a warm drink in peace and breathe deeply.

Remember: This season doesn’t have to leave you exhausted. Taking care of you means you will have more energy, joy and presence for the things that matter. Visit or call us if you would like to talk about stress, sleep, routines or self-care ideas.

❄️ Is your skin feeling dry, flaky or tight this winter?
The cold, dry air and indoor heating that come with the season can really take a toll on your skin’s moisture barrier.

Here are some practical ways we can help you care for your skin so you stay comfortable, protected and healthy all season long.

🌬️ What is happening to your skin?
- Winter air has less moisture, and indoor heating further strips the skin of water. This weakens the protective barrier of your skin.
- Regular soaps with high pH, hot baths, harsh cleansers and exposure to wind can all worsen dryness by damaging your skin barrier.

🧴 Smart skincare habits this season:
- After you wash, pat your skin dry gently and apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment while your skin is still slightly damp. This helps “lock in” moisture.
- Switch to a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser and avoid drying bars of soap or heavily fragranced products.
- Keep showers or baths brief and lukewarm rather than hot, and limit time to around 5-10 minutes for sensitive skin.
- Use a rich moisturizer or ointment (look for ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, urea, petrolatum) especially on hands, lower legs and areas exposed to the cold.
- Consider a humidifier at home to boost indoor air moisture and support your skin.
- Don’t skip sunscreen. UV damage still happens in the winter and can further weaken your skin barrier.

Let’s make sure your skin stays comfortable, hydrated and protected—even when the snow hits and the wind howls. Call us or stop by if you have questions about skin-care.

🍂 Cough & Cold Season Is Here 🧣

As the colder weather sets in and we spend more time indoors, it is also prime time for those pesky cold viruses to circulate. A typical cold often starts with a scratchy throat, then a runny nose, congestion, sneezing, and a cough.

Here’s what you should know:
- The first 1-3 days of a cold often bring a sore throat, sneezing and a runny nose.
- There is no cure for the common cold. It is caused by viruses and must run its course.
- Most people feel better within 7-10 days, though a cough or congestion may linger for up to two weeks.

How we can help you at your pharmacy:
- We can help you pick safe over-the-counter options for symptom relief.
- We can answer your questions about symptom relief: when it’s time to call your doctor, how to ease a sore throat or cough, and supportive care like hydration and rest.

Helpful tips you can use at home:
- Get plenty of rest and sleep.
- Stay well-hydrated.
- Use steam, humidifiers or a warm shower to ease congestion.
- Wash your hands often and clean frequently touched surfaces to slow the spread of viruses.

Here’s to a season of good health and fewer sniffles!

War hurts not only those who fight, and their loved ones, but those we never knew would suffer. The pain spreads further than we can ever see. We thank, respect, and honour our veterans — they gave us their everything. We also thank their loved ones who shared their sacrifices. We will never forget.

📅 November is Diabetes Awareness Month 💙

At our pharmacy, the health of our community is our priority. This month serves as a reminder of how we can all play a role in managing and preventing diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that develops when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it does produce.

Did you know?
- In Canada, around 9.4 % of people (≈ 3.7 million) are living with diagnosed diabetes.

- Early detection and careful management can reduce the risk of complications like heart disease, nerve damage, kidney problems, and more.

- Type 2 diabetes (the most common kind) can often be delayed or prevented with healthy habits.

📍 How we can help you:

- Free medication reviews with our pharmacist to ensure your medications (and any OTCs) are working safely and optimally.

- Guidance on blood-glucose monitoring supplies, proper use of insulin or other medications, and help with understanding what your lab results mean.

- Support with lifestyle changes: healthy eating, physical activity, and managing stress.

💡 Tip for this month:
If you or someone you care for has been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, ask us about setting up a personal care plan. Even small changes, such as walking 15 minutes or more each day or choosing more vegetables at meals, can add up.

We have a certified diabetes educator available. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to call to schedule an appointment to speak with her.

Want to make every bathroom break a little easier?

We care about gut health from end to end; yes, even your next trip to the bathroom.

Using a stool that is designed to elevate your feet, allowing your hips to open more naturally, your pelvic floor and re**um to relax more easily, can help facilitate elimination with less strain.

Why does it work? Research shows that elevating the feet alters the anorectal angle and reduces the time and effort required for bowel movements.

For best results, pair this posture change with good habits, such as consuming fibre-rich foods, staying hydrated with plenty of water, engaging in daily movement, and maintaining regular toileting routines.

If you have questions about this product, please don't hesitate to reach out to our staff. They are available for $29.95.
