I figure this might be a good place to share a little random thing I was just educated on (for those of you concerned about hormonal issues or hormone related cancers).
If your bones hurt after menopause, it's because estrogen protects your bones from breaking down (by inhibiting osteoclast formation and promoting its cell death). As estrogen drops, osteoclasts (the things that break down bone) become more active.
DIM (found naturally in cruciferous vegetables) has been shown to:
●Inhibit bone breakdown: Studies show that DIM suppresses the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue, which directly helps to maintain bone mass.
●Promote bone formation: DIM promotes the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, the cells that build new bone. It does this partly by up-regulating the BAP1/IP3R/SOCE signaling pathway, a molecular mechanism that supports bone formation.
●Reduce inflammation: In some models, DIM has been shown to decrease inflammation, which can contribute to bone loss, particularly in diseases like periodontal disease.
Plus.... it helps the estrogen you DO have break down into the form that is least problematic vs the ones that can cause cancer, inflammation and DNA damage! Wild.
