Toddlers take their role as explorers and scientists seriously because that's how they learn about their world and what's in it. Too much of "No, don't touch that" "Leave that alone, you'll break it" "Look with your eyes not your hands" and the children learn. They learn to dampen down their superpower when it comes to learning, their curiosity. Their world becomes a 'No World' instead of a 'Yes World'. We can avoid that by putting the treasures up or away when of little scientist is just getting the hang of this three dimensional world and all of the interesting things in it. It's only for a while, yet it makes the world of difference to how the toddlers come to see themselves as explorers and scientists.

Our children can grow us up if we let them, and here's how.
When we end up yelling at our kids, that's as much a message for us as it is for the kids. Losing it can be our window into what we need to learn to deal with tricky situations when we are triggered.

"She's testing me”

"He's defying me all the time”

"They won't listen to me”

"He's trying to annoy me”

"She doesn't care how much it bothers me”

Me, me, me, me, me.

Your child is massively unlikely to be concerned with you when they're in the middle of a meltdown...they're entirely more likely to be wrapped up in themselves. Because they're two or three or four (or eight) and their world is egocentric.

You are the adult. You are the one with the cognitive capacity to think into the future in a way that your child cannot. You are the one with the knowledge to ride out the emotion until it is over. An emotion is like a train going through a tunnel -- there's no way out but to go through.
When your child's whole entire world is wrapped up in how things feel so, so bad right at this moment, you're the one who can remember that it will pass, and breathe, and co-regulate.

[Image description: A picture of a crying child, next to words which read, “Your child is not trying to upset YOU. Your child isn’t even thinking about YOU. Your child is struggling and dealing with their own strong emotions.” End description.]

Tearing paper a simple fine motor activity that requires only scrap paper and your hands. In fact, tearing paper actually helps children develop so many essential skills: hand strength, hand eye coordination, precision, refined movements, bilateral coordination…

When a child tears a piece of paper, they improve hand strength and endurance in the small muscles in the hand. These intrinsic muscles are important in so many fine motor skills, including those important to handwriting and coloring, managing buttons and zippers, manipulating pegs, and more.

When paper is torn, the hands assume a great tripod grasp which is effective and a mature grasp for writing and coloring. The non-dominant hand is assisting in the tearing and encourages appropriate assistance for tasks like holding the paper while writing, and managing paper while cutting with scissors.

Just look at the skills kids develop with a tear paper activity:
