Today is World IBS Day. As a dietitian it is not uncommon that a doctor will send their patient to me for another more obvious health concern, one that has a blood-marker to tell them such as high cholesterol or high blood sugar….and then during my initial nutrition assessment IBS and gut health symptoms come up such as diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, excessive gas, or constipation. I always address these alongside their original health concern because health often starts or is linked to the gut. And guess what? Often what I’m suggesting will also help elevate cholesterol or blood sugars! Such as taking psyllium husk, chia seeds or ground flax seeds 🌱

A high fibre protein shake! I experimented today and mixed orange flavoured Metamucil with vanilla flavoured protein powder. It was SO delicious! Great for building muscle mass. And great for your gut health, especially if you have IBS.

Healthy doesn’t have to be boring, or be a punishment. Find things you enjoy whether we are referring to foods you are eating or physical activity you are doing. And remember, being healthy will help you actually enjoy your life more! Think less aches and pains, being less tired so that you can go do things 😃

There is nothing worse than avoiding social gatherings, or even work, because you have diarrhea from the foods that you eat. Missing out on these things is not fun!

Here is my “realistic” breakfast 🌞 An espresso and a banana chopped up in plain, grass fed yogurt right in the container!

Yes, I often show patients this “poop” chart. 😄 The look on their face when I show it is ALWAYS priceless. Then when they realize I’m actually being serious, they have fun picking out their type (or types if their bowel movements vary).

I genuinely am fascinated with IBS and gut health. Initially knowing my son’s dad’s mother passed away from Crohn’s at a very young age. Then watching him suffer from IBS, and now my son having it a bit. And I have had bouts of IBS myself. The last time it was what we call infectious-IBS. I had contracted C.Difficile from the hospital and if was just awful 😣 I am so thankful that I know what I know and was able to rebuild my gut health in a couple months.

Almonds are a high FODMAP food, therefore so is almond butter! FODMAPs ferment in your gut, which is what could be causing your bloating, gas, stabbing pains in your abdomen, or even diarrhea.
