Self-injury (sometimes called non-suicidal self-injury or NSSI) is when someone deliberately hurts themself but does not intend to end their life. It can include cutting, burning, scratching, hitting, or interfering with wound healing.
Often, self-injury develops as a way of coping with overwhelming emotions like anxiety, sadness, anger, or emotional numbness. While it is not a mental illness itself, it may be linked to challenges such as depression, trauma, or difficulties managing emotions.
Many people struggle in silence because of shame or stigma.
