A herniated disc is when the spine’s “cushion” (disc) gets stressed and the inner material bulges out, sometimes irritating a nerve.
The two big baddies that cause disc problems are:
1) Gravity (load):
Sitting, slouching, lifting, and repetitive bending/twisting increase pressure on the discs over time.
2) Tight muscles (tension):
Tight hips/back muscles limit movement and “pull” on the spine, so the stress concentrates in one area.
Gravity is a constant pressure on the spine and tight muscles create more compression.
You really don’t want to be on the bad side of these two!
Quick wins: move more, take sitting breaks, and get a massage to calm down that hyperactive nervous system and get those muscles to relax!
