Stella Sturko

Gary and Candy Sturko would like to thank the kind people of Fairview Home, and the medical professionals who helped Mom as she ascended into Heaven.

Stella Sturko was born in Brandon. Mom was a lifelong member of Ukrainian Orthodox Church on Stickney. Father Skrumeda was Mom’s lifelong friend. In later years, Mom resided in Fairview. Mom was extremely popular in Fairview.

Mom worked in Winnipeg as a teenager for a while, becoming a renowned singer. She cut a popular radio single. However, Mom loved Brandon, moving home at 19.

Mom married Walter Sturko. Soon came children. Our prairie house on 30-23 St. had a garden with peas and corn, the meadow beside our home filled with wildflowers. Palidwar’s Corner Store nearby. The Sturko house was Grand Central Station. During the 1979 Winter Games Mom had coffee with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

Loved ones included sister Olga, niece Kathy, brother John and Margaret, nephews Peter and Michael, next door’s fun-loving Nick Sturko, and neighbours the Borotsiks. Friends included Barry Condy, Dave Campbell, Jeff Cristall, Tom Thompson, Mrs. Bradley, Tom and Karen Baker, Principal Colin Mailer, Teacher Mr. Jolly, Valdy (folksinger) and Gary’s future wife Candy. Candy became Mom’s most beloved friend. Friendly dogs were Taffy, then Hermie.

Mom was very proud of sons Gary Patrick (Sheridan College, Art Fundamentals Alumni), Michael (Brandon University Alumni), Derek (Brandon University Alumni), and beloved Daughter-In-Law Candy (Brandon University Alumni). Candy was the daughter that Mom never had.

Mom’s favorite job was at Wilson’s Stationery in historic Laplont Block. One year, Mom sold more “Bic pens” than anyone in Canada, winning a 1970 purple Iverson 10 Speed. Mom gifted the bicycle to Beloved Son Gary.

The last person Mom heard was beloved son Gary. Gary was able to play his 1970 Linda Manzer Acoustic guitar for Mom for about 10 minutes before she happily passed. Mom is now young again in Heaven, enjoying perogies, holubsi, and Khrustyky.

Mom: From your beloved Son Gary

Mom, a shadow has crossed my heart. But one fine day you will see me coming. You will be waiting for me with Jesus Christ.

Surrounded by sparkling stars and Angels, I will stand tall. I will walk the Golden Stairway. I will not be afraid.

I will embrace you Mom with purest love. My beautiful wife Candy and I will be with you for all of eternity.

My beautiful Mother.

Orville Peter Prokopchuk

November 10, 1949 ~ February 1, 2026

Orv, as he was known to most people, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the age of 76. Orv was born in Brandon, Manitoba on November 10, 1949, to Nellie and Peter Prokopchuk.

As a baby, Orv and his family moved to Uncle Mike’s farm in Crawford Park, then to Sandy Lake and Erickson before moving back to Brandon. Orv attended elementary and high school in Brandon. Following high school, Orv attended Assiniboine Community College and obtained his Barbers License, beginning a long career. Orv was a well-known barber in town whom everyone spoke highly of.

Orv met Gillian Black and they married in February 1974. In 1978 they were blessed with a daughter, Marissa. Marissa grew up primarily with her father during her childhood and they were very close.

Prior to Marissa’s arrival, Orv, an avid hockey player himself, and supporter of the Wheat Kings, boarded Wheat King players in their home. The most well-known being Dave Semenko and Rick Piche, with whom he became very good friends and treasured and maintained those friendships over the years.

Orv had many interests throughout his life. He belonged to the Sea Cadets Band in his high school years. He loved animals and often you would see his faithful Newfie dog, Casey, at his side even while cutting hair. Orv loved Rock-N-Roll music, especially the 70’s.

One of Orv’s passions was fishing. He owned a Bait and Tackle Shop. He spent many days fishing at Sandy Lake, Rivers, and Pelican Lake. Orv was also a self-taught handy man and home builder, building several homes in which they lived in.

Orv was a very active member of the community. He was a member of the Keystone Kinsmen Club where at one time served as President. During his Kinsmen days he enjoyed playing hockey with his fellow members and friends.

Eventually, Orv met his partner Connie Foreman and in semi-retirement they were kept busy working at Orv’s coffee business known as Pro Coffee, and they often travelled in their motorhome.

Due to a very serious motorcycle accident in June 2010, Orv’s life was forever changed; his career as a barber was no longer.

Orv is survived by his loving daughter Marissa Prokopchuk; his sister Liz (Earl) Andrusiak; nephew Owen (Sandra) Andrusiak; great-nephew John Andrusiak; great-niece Alison Andrusiak, Vince Andrusiak (Lauri); great-niece Emily Popp Andrusiak; his sister Iris (Dan) Sutherland; niece Lisa (Barry) Chapman; great-nephew Zachary Chapman; great-niece Arianna (Jake) Carlson, Tanner Chapman; great-niece Madison (Harrison) Theocharakis; and great-niece Carly Sutherland.

Orv was predeceased by his parents Nellie and Peter Prokopchuk, very close Uncle Mike Prokopchuck, partner Connie Forman, and beloved nephew Dean Sutherland, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who provided care and compassion to Orv throughout the years. Special thanks to caregiver/friend Jesse Dourado.

Donations in Orv’s Memory may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 220-17th Street East, Brandon, R7A 7M6

Nelson John Baranyk

Nelson Baranyk

Nelson was born November 16th, 1948, at the Shoal Lake Hospital to his parents Walter and Anne Baranyk. His brother Leonard was waiting for him and his sister Janice joined later to complete the Baranyk family of five.

Nelson grew up on the family farm in Seech, MB. Around the age of eight, his family moved to Strathclair, MB, where he lived, attended school, and later graduated.

Eventually Nelson moved to Winnipeg, MB where he lived with his sister Janice. During this time, he met the love of his life and future wife Shirley Katchin. In the summer of 1973 they moved to Brandon, MB and on October 20th, 1973, they married in Rossburn, MB on a beautiful sunny day.

Nelson and Shirley had two additions to their family, Michael in 1977 and Shane in 1979.

One of Nelson’s greatest prides was building his family home in the fall of 1985 with his uncle Lawrence. They lived in that home until May, 2022 when he moved to Valley View Care Home where he spent his remaining years.

There are many words to describe Nelson: funny, joyful, caring, helpful, hardworking and charming to name a few. He never tried to be the life of the party or the center of attention, but when he entered a room, he was. With his big smile, hilarious laugh and broken English people loved Nelson the moment they met him!

For over 35 years, Nelson worked as a Meat Inspector for the Federal Government and at the same time ran an income tax business, running from house to house doing income taxes and making friends. He worked extremely hard to support his family and at the same time lived and enjoyed life to the fullest.

Between chasing kids to hockey rinks, golf courses and ball diamonds he found time to do one of the things he loved most... spend time with friends and family. Nelson loved any get together - a supper, wedding, social or someone stopping by to get their income tax done. The conversation usually started with Nelson saying, 'You got time for a drink?'

Next to his family, Nelson’s next love was golf! He loved playing the game, but even more so, the people he golfed with, and his time on the course was never enough.

Through his entire time in Brandon, Nelson was a devoted parishioner at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church and a member of the Men’s Club at the Ukrainian Reading Hall Association where he spent hours volunteering and enjoying good times with good friends.

Into retirement, Nelson and Shirley travelled and spent countless hours chasing their four grandkids, Carter, Billie, Kasia and Brady.

Nelson loved life, loved people and more importantly loved having a good time with friends and family. At gatherings he would sometimes just sit back, not say much, but take it all in!! This was truly his best time of life.

Funeral Service will be held at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue, Brandon on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak as Celebrant. Cantor will be Stella Fedeniuk. Lunch will follow at the Ukrainian Reading Association Hall.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Nelson may be made to St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 0G7.

“Dad, it is guaranteed when people met you, they never forgot you and as for your family we will never forget you and how hard you worked to give us the best life possible, which you did. Dad, we will love you forever and you will always be remembered.” Love your family.

William Gerald Lockhart

Bill passed away, as he wanted: in his sleep surrounded by those who loved him. He left us in the early morning hours of January 23rd, 2026, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre after a brief illness. He was known as Bill to most, but to us he was Dad, W***y, Grandpa, Gramps, Great-Grandpa, Uncle, brother, friend, mentor, and so much more.

Bill was born to Charlie and Daisy Lockhart in Oak River, Manitoba and grew up in the Lenore area. Times were lean in his early years, and he often related how the family survived on venison and Jello! In 1953 he met the love of his life, a beautiful, young schoolteacher named Flora (Flo) Ashcroft, who was working near Lenore. In 1957 they married and their love flourished unconditionally for the next 68+ years. That same year, the young couple moved to Brandon and Bill began his plumbing apprenticeship with Maguire Plumbing.

In 1958, daughter Sheree was born, followed by son Gerald in 1960, son Dallas in 1966, and daughter Lorelei in 1971. Around 1970 Dad embarked on his career of self-employment by starting L&J Plumbing & Heating with his business partner, Ken Jaworski. Bill then set out on his own in 1976 as Lockhart Plumbing & Heating, a business still family owned and operated by grandson, Tyler Warburton! Bill was very proud to have Tyler continue his business under the family name and considered it his legacy: we think it is just one of many! Dad finally “retired” at age 75, though he continued to act as a consultant until his death. He could still recall where a specific water shut-off valve was located in a building, despite having worked in thousands of homes and businesses.

In 1969, Bill and Flo built and moved onto a 5-acre parcel just outside of Brandon city limits, at 1805 – 34th Street. This was the beginning of his desire to have a place of their own on which to have horses.

Dad loved horses! Bill and Flo brought some of the first Arabian horses into Manitoba in the early 1960’s. From then until 2018, there was always a horse (or 30!) around and it was a family affair with all of the kids showing in a variety of classes. Bill’s love of horses never waned, and he still loved going to shows and visiting with the many old and new friends made around the horses. Sheree has mini-ponies which Dad loved, and he was very proud of his grandson, Landon, who trains cutting horses in Texas. Dad had many horses over the years, but his most beloved was an Arabian stallion, known as Pistol. Bill and Pistol, and friends, shared some very memorable back-country trips, and the family treasures the pictures and memories!

In 1978, Bill and Flo moved 5 miles south of Brandon onto a ¼ section that became their home for the next 40 years and was known as Win-Dee Acres Arabians! From this blank canvas, a loving home was built, a barn and outbuildings were built, as were corrals and pastures. This was the backdrop for a lifetime of memories for our families to be made. Mom & Dad’s farm was always the go-to place for family gatherings, with room for the grandkids to learn and be themselves! More than once, the golf cart needed a dent repaired or a wheel straightened after a minor mishap with a tree or fencepost! Through hard work and the desire to have a show place, the farm was always immaculately mowed and trimmed. Dad had high expectations of himself and of us!

In 2018, when Bill was 83 years old, the tough choice was made to sell the farm and relocate into Brandon. He never completely adjusted to city living but it was made easier by Tyler developing his home on the same quarter as the farm, and building a shop where Bill could putter. Right up until the first week of January, Dad was busy building birdhouses in the shop!

He was also a regular attendee at the Table of Knowledge, held most mornings at the 18th Street Humpty’s!

Countless trips were made over the years to watch the grandkids’ sports and school events, attend weddings, and celebrate the arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren! The first grandchild, Tara, arrived on Bill’s birthday of April 8th and, for 45 years, they celebrated their birthdays together! There are 10 grandchildren and 13 great-children, who have many fond memories of their Grandpa Bill, and he developed a unique relationship with every one of them!

Dad was a hardworking, genuine, and generous man with a sharp mind and a natural ability to think outside the box. Known for being able to fix just about anything, he approached life with skill, determination and practicality. He had a good sense of humor, a quick wit, and never minded being the recipient of the odd prank, always shared in good fun! Dad appreciated life’s simple pleasures and treasured his time spent with family and friends. He was always happy to unwind and relax at the end of the day with a cold beer, usually in the shop.

Bill also contributed to the local horse associations by giving his time and energy. He was one of the original (founding) members of the Manitoba Gymkhana and Rodeo Assoc (MGRA), served as both a director and the president of the Manitoba Arabian Horse Association (MAHA), and also served as a director on the board of the Provincial Exhibition.

A little later in life, Bill and Flo began to travel. They visited Gerald in Australia three times for extended stays, and travelled to New Zealand, Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, Cuba, and did a very memorable road trip of the Alaskan Highway. If Dad had a regret, it was maybe waiting too long to start travelling and seeing the sites!

Life was not without some adversity for Bill. He underwent a 4-vessel bypass open chest surgery in 2001. That was followed ten years later, by 4 stents, and another 5 stents a few years after. He then underwent an aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We often joked that he had a bionic heart, but were so grateful for the extra time it gave us with Dad.

In September, 2025, Dad was hospitalized with pneumonia. After 11 days, he was discharged, but his fire was gone. He was admitted again on January 7th and never left. As fate would have it, we were able to celebrate Christmas 2025 with all 4 of Bill and Flo’s children being together with them, for the first time in many, many years. The eldest son, Gerald, lives in Australia and had decided earlier on that he would be home for Christmas this year!

Bill was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Daisy Lockhart; his in-laws John and Isabella Ashcroft, and his sister, Jean Brownridge. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Flora Lockhart; daughter Sheree (Kim) Warburton, and their 3 children, Tara (Chad) Hilhorst, Trevor (Cherisse) Warburton, and Tyler (Lindsay) Warburton and families; son Gerald Lockhart; son Dallas Lockhart (Deanna) and his 3 children, Nolan, Landon (Maya) Lockhart, Morgyn; and daughter Lorelei Lockhart and her 4 children Kyle, Kelsey (Travis) Ratcliffe, Travis, Tyson and families. Also lovingly remembering Bill are his brothers Alec (Lorna) Lockhart and family, and David Lockhart (Sue), and several nieces and nephews.

Following Bill’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place and the family will scatter his ashes as he requested. A memorial service will be scheduled for “when it’s nice outside”. We have no doubt that Bill has Pistol saddled and they are riding the trails as they loved to! Good ride cowboy, good ride!

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A7H8, in Bill’s name, or to a charity of one’s choice, is appreciated.

April 5, 1943 – January 19, 2026

Sandra (known as Sandy) Hedley was born on Monday, April 5, 1943 and passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Monday, January 19, 2026 at the Riverdale Personal Care Home in Rivers, Manitoba. Sandy was born in Brandon, Manitoba and lived in a variety of places in her early years. In 1957 she moved to the Manitoba Development Centre in Portage la Prairie where she resided until she returned to the Rivers/Cardale area in the mid 1970’s, as a part of the Welcome Home program which was designed to have clients move back into community settings. Sandy had often visited grandparents during the summers who lived in the Cardale area. Sandy became part of the Rolling Dale Enterprises program when it first developed its day program at Cardale. She later became one of the first residents in their residence program in Rivers, Manitoba. Sandy was a regular participant in the day program at Rolling Dale until her retirement, when she moved to the Riverdale Personal Care Home where she resided for nine years. Sandy had polio as a young child which left her with limited mobility in her arm and leg, but she was not one to complain and would try very hard to improve her skills in a variety of areas.

For many years, Sandy was the first person one would meet when entering Rolling Dale as she served as their receptionist, greeting people as they entered, answering the phone, and daily working on the many crocheted afghan squares, which would be sewn into multicoloured afghans by the staff. Sandy enjoyed the many activities and outings, and the annual weekly vacation time at Clear Lake. She participated in the Special Olympic program and had numerous trophies to showcase her accomplishments. Sandy had a vast collection of movies and CDs and spent countless hours watching movies. She enjoyed music and played the harmonica and would readily entertain her friends at Rolling Dale. She faithfully attended the Rivers Community Church and would play her harmonica at their Christmas concerts. Sandy had a quiet personality and was kind in her responses to those around her. Many devoted and loving caregivers have been part of Sandy’s life, and she was lovingly cared for at the personal care home.

A memorial service will be held for Sandy at the Rivers Community Church at 447 Edward St. in Rivers, on Thursday, February 5, at 1:30pm, with interment at the Rivers Cemetery at 12:45pm, prior to the service. Refreshments will be served after the memorial service. Memorial donations may be made to the Rolling Dale Enterprises in Rivers, or to the activity department of Riverdale Personal Care Home.

James Kennedy “Jim” MacArthur

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Jim MacArthur on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. His loss has left a profound emptiness in the lives of his family and friends.

Jim was born on September 1, 1944, to George and Marjorie MacArthur of Brandon. Throughout his school years he developed a love for horses and eventually cattle. After graduating from Vincent Massey, Jim began work in the advertising sector of Labatt’s Brewery. Later, he worked for Imperial Oil and at the same time began building a small herd of cattle.

In 1968, Jim met his life partner Bev and they married in 1973. With the purchase of a farm north of Virden, Jim and Bev established their cattle and grain operation. They built many friendships through showing cattle in the United States and Canada and hosting cattle-related events at their farm.

While farming, Jim started working at the local livestock auction mart, owned by Manitoba Pool and then Heartland Livestock. He eventually became the manager, an ideal career for a man who loved to visit with everyone. Jim enjoyed his job. He had a deep respect for his staff and customers, many of whom became true friends.

Throughout his life, Jim had the unique privilege of counting his childhood friends among his closest companions. After retiring, the travel bug bit, and together with this special group—and others along the way—they created countless memories through extensive travels, from cruises to B&Bs in the South.

Jim will be dearly missed by his wife Bev, his beloved Corgi Sadie, his sister Marion (Wayne) McLeod, niece Robyn (Rick) Denbow and their children Reese and Ryan, nephew Tom (Tara Lynn) McLeod and their children Olivia and Kara.

A private Celebration of Jim’s life will be held in the summer.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Jim may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre (where he volunteered), 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3 or the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB, R7A 7M6.
