Apathy in dementia is one of the most misunderstood changes.
Your loved one may stop enjoying hobbies they once loved, sit quietly for long periods, or seem "not bothered" about things that used to matter to them.
This isn't laziness. It isn't giving up. And it's not a choice.
Apathy happens because dementia affects the parts of the brain that create motivation and emotional drive. Even simple decisions or starting an activity can feel overwhelming.
What hurts caregivers most is the silence - the absence of interest where connection once lived. But your presence still matters. Sitting beside them, offering gentle invitations instead of pressure, and celebrating small moments can make a difference. °
Sometimes, love looks quieter in dementia — but it's still there.
When someone with dementia seems "uninterested," reminding them to try harder usually makes things worse — not better. Apathy is a brain-based symptom, not a lack of love or effort.

At Daughter On Call —>safety, care and comfort is our #1 priority with our residents.
When a resident wakes in the middle of the night or early hours and won't go back to sleep, the first thing to remember is that
night waking in dementia is not a behaviour to correct. You need to manage the state they are in.
If the brain is awake, forcing sleep usually increases distress and risks disturbing others.
Our role at night is safety, calm, and comfort - not "getting them back to bed at all costs. 🌙

Eating changes in dementia can be confusing and heartbreaking for families. One day they barely touch their food. Another day they keep asking for snacks, or suddenly refuse everything except sweets. It’s easy to think they’re being stubborn or difficult — but these changes are part of how dementia affects the brain, not a personal choice. 🍽️

Dementia can dull hunger cues, change taste and smell, or make familiar foods feel unfamiliar. A person may forget they just ate, or feel overwhelmed by a full plate. Others may crave comfort foods because they feel safe and predictable. What looks like “overeating” or “picky eating” is often the brain searching for reassurance, not misbehavior. 💛

💬 Caregiver truth: When someone with dementia eats too little or too much, it’s rarely about the food. It’s the brain struggling with hunger signals, memory, and comfort.
