Supporting someone with hearing aids doesn’t require big changes — just a little awareness.

Simple things like facing the person when speaking, saying their name before starting a conversation or choosing a quieter place to talk can make communication much easier. These small adjustments help reduce listening fatigue and make conversations feel more natural for everyone involved.

Clear communication works best when everyone participates. A little patience and understanding can go a long way in helping loved ones stay connected.

Advocating for yourself is not complaining. It is part of successful hearing care.

Hearing aids improve access to sound, but they do not restore hearing to normal. There will still be situations where small adjustments make a meaningful difference — asking someone to face you, repeat a point or get your attention before speaking.

Clear communication works best when everyone participates. Realistic expectations, ongoing adjustments and open conversations are what lead to long-term success.

That’s a wrap on our 8-part series, inspired by real experiences from hearing aid users. We hope it gives you insight, reassurance, and practical tips to navigate your journey. You’re not alone — support is out there, and knowing how to use it makes all the difference. Follow us for more helpful hearing tips!

Part 7 of 8: Follow-ups are part of good care

Needing adjustments doesn’t mean something is wrong. It means your care is working as it should. Ongoing support is part of successful hearing care.

Hearing aids are still electronic devices that require firmware updates and adjustments throughout the life of your hearing aids. Depending on the style, the receivers, wax filters and domes need to be replaced after a certain time. Others have mic filters and vents that need to be cleaned. Whether it's for counselling on how to work with your working aids or maintenance for the hearing aids, the clinic you purchased your hearing aids from, should be on top booking you in for 6 month checks and even re-testing every year or two afterwards.

A large part of success on this journey, requires you to be open and transparent with your clinician's, in order to create realistic expectations on what to expect and to help you with better hearing.
