Kindness in action at BCHS!

Yesterday, TeamBCHS celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17) with a compliment board set up in the A-Wing entrance of our Brantford General Hospital, and the response was heartwarming. 💜

Staff were invited to take a little kindness with them and leave behind thoughtful words for a colleague or friend. The board quickly filled with messages of appreciation, encouragement, and gratitude — small notes that made a meaningful difference.

Kindness doesn’t have to be grand to have impact. It is something that can be practiced every day.

Because when we lead with kindness, we build a culture where everyone feels valued, supported, and connected. 🫶

This past Valentine’s weekend, some of our patients felt a little extra love thanks to the thoughtful students at Banbury Heights Elementary School in Brantford.

Mrs. Medeiros’ Grade 4/5 class, along with several other classes, created handmade Valentine’s Day cards filled with cheerful messages and bright artwork for one of our units at Brantford General Hospital. 💌 These heartfelt pick-me-ups brought smiles to both patients and staff, who were grateful to share in the moment.

Thank you to Mrs. Medeiros and all the participating students at Banbury Heights for spreading kindness and reminding our patients that their community is thinking of them. 💓

Members of Mar Mari the Apostle Assyrian Church of the East Youth Association recently visited our Critical Care Unit (CCU) at the Brantford General Hospital to donate heartfelt mementos (photo keychains and vials that hold patient electrocardiogram strips) to the Three Wishes Project. While these items may seem small, they carry immense meaning for families navigating the most difficult moments of loss.

"The Three Wishes Project is designed to humanize the process of dying for patients with unrecoverable critical illness. By granting three personal wishes, the program celebrates lives and comforts grieving families through keepsakes and meaningful gestures. We encourage the community to bring forth donations like these," said Will Thomas-Boaz, Clinical Manager, CCU.

During the pandemic, when visiting was restricted, the community rallied with knitted and crocheted hearts to connect patients and families. Today, donations like these mementos continue that legacy of compassion, offering families something tangible to hold onto.

Kari Wilson, Executive Director, BCHS Foundation, shared, "Not only do these kind gestures provide comfort to families during an incredibly difficult time, but the Three Wishes program also supports CCU staff by having meaningful items readily available so they too can honour patient lives and recognize a family's loss. To ensure we can continue offering these meaningful items, the Foundation will also collect monetary donations to help fund their ongoing purchase."

Maryna Yaqoob, Youth President, Mar Mari the Apostle Assyrian Church of the East Youth Association, expressed, "Each year, youth from our organization are encouraged to participate in our annual — Mar Benyamin Shimun XXI, Patron Saint of the Assyrian Church of the East Youth Association Give Back — to their local communities as a living expression of faith, service, and unity."

Please visit bchsdonate.ca to donate to the program! 💙

As part of its commitment to high‑quality, patient‑centred care, Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) continues to strengthen how laboratory testing supports safe and effective treatment.

Each year, BCHS’ lab performs approximately 2.6 million tests. Blood work makes up a significant portion of this activity — not only because it is essential for diagnosis and to guide treatment, but also because it is an area of medicine that continues to evolve with new evidence and best practices.

With the aim to follow evidence-based guidelines for ordering tests and determining what blood work is truly needed, BCHS launched a sustainable QI initiative for patients undergoing routine elective surgery.

“In March 2024 we established a functional working group called Choosing Wisely Together within the Perioperative Quality Council to work on the shared goal of reducing testing that’s no longer best practice,” said Dr. Susan O’Leary, Medical Director Perioperative Services and Ambulatory Care. “This was a year-long effort from our teams to take a deep, collaborative look at our practices and ensure they reflect the latest science and the best interests of our patients.”

Carrying Culture Forward - A Life Shaped by Community

For Rabiah, being featured in BCHS’ I Belong campaign during Black History Month is more than recognition—it’s a celebration of African heritage, community, and identity.

From the togetherness of Nyama Choma festivals to the comfort of shared meals like Ugali, these traditions reflect the power of food, music, and celebration that bring people together across all backgrounds.

At BCHS, Rabiah carries this same spirit into the workplace—leading with authenticity, compassion, and a commitment to equity. Through her involvement in the TeamBCHS Black Resource Group, she helps create inclusive spaces where people feel valued, heard, and supported.

“When we lead with integrity and engage with the broader community, we help create lasting change. It’s a collective effort, and I’m proud to be part of the journey.”

You don’t have to give up game-day favourites to eat well. Remember the 80/20 rule: small swaps, mindful portions, and a little balance can go a long way. 🏈

As Super Bowl weekend approaches, the BCHS Diabetes Team reminds the community that healthy eating is about simple, realistic choices during social events. These small switch-ups can support blood sugar management while still allowing people to enjoy the moment.

Healthy eating doesn’t mean missing out. It’s about balance, planning, and feeling good after the game too.

From our Diabetes Team to your living room—have a great Super Bowl weekend!
