DAL FMIG VISITS SOUTH SHORE!

The Dalhousie Medical School Family Medicine Interest Group, primarily made up of Med 1 and 2 students, recently spent the weekend touring the South Shore exploring what rural medicine is all about.

The weekend started off with a tour of Queens General Hospital led by Dr. Al Doucet and Dr. Andy Blackadar. After lunch we headed back to Bridgewater for a skills session led by three of our family medicine residents. Drs. Redden, Brown and Venkataraman took the students through stations on suturing, casting and POCUS (point of care ultrasound). Following this the students had a tour of South Shore Regional Hospital with Dr. Greg Thibodeau, with a short information session on the oppotunities for medical learners on the South Shore.

Saturday night we hosted a fun evening at King Street Beer of Pizza, Pints and Puzzles. Four teams battled for the honor of being the first to complete their puzzle. We were joined by a few of our LIC students and a family medicine doctor. The competition was fierce, but one team was crowned the PPP Champ 2025!

Sunday the students headed over to the LCLC for a power yoga class before heading to Fishermen's Memorial Hospital for a tour lead by Dr. Michel Samson and Health Services Foundation CEO Arleen Stevens. We sent them off with a bagged lunch and many of them stuck around to explore the Lunenburg area.

These tours are so important for exposing the students to rural medicine and just a taste of what it is available to them personally and professionally on the South Shore. We were happy to partner with Patti Smith, Physician Recruitment Consultant at Nova Scotia Health, to host this group. We hope to see some of them back on the South Shore soon!

WELCOME BRIANNA!

We are so lucky to have six new Dalhousie Medical School LIC students joining us to learn and practice rural healthcare for the next year. Let's get to know them better:

Brianna was born and raised in Halifax, but her mother is from Blockhouse. She
spent much of her childhood on the South Shore, especially on Big Mushamush Lake.

Brianna is part of the Dalhousie Rural Family Medicine pilot project with Cape Breton Universtiy. As part of this she has committed to practicing Family Medicine and completing a 5-year return of service in rural Nova Scotia. Her educational interests also include palliative care, public health, and medical humanities.

If you see Brianna in the hospital, the clinic or in the community, please extend a big South Shore welcome!

WELCOME AJ!

We are so lucky to have six new Dalhousie Medical School LIC students joining us to learn and practice rural healthcare for the next year. Let's get to know them better:

Originally from the South Shore, AJ grew up in Lunenburg. Before medical school, he did his undergrad at Dal, followed by a Master’s in Immunosciences and Infection at the University of Bonn in Germany. He does not know what type of medicine he wants to pursue at this point. Everything seems so interesting, he's not sure how anyone can choose!

AJ is passionate about planetary health and sustainability, which ties into his love of the outdoors. He enjoys hiking, cycling, skating, and whatever else he can do to get moving - especially if it involves being outside!

AJ is excited to be back in the South Shore for the LIC program. If you see AJ in the hospital, the clinic or in the community, please extend a big South Shore welcome!

WELCOME TANAKA!

We are so lucky to have six new Dalhousie Medical School LIC students joining us to learn and practice rural healthcare for the next year. Let's get to know them better:

Tanaka has been living in Halifax for about 10 years, where she completed her undergraduate degree in Medical Sciences at Dalhousie University and worked for a bit before joining the Dalhousie Medicine Class of 2027.

Tanaka has always loved coming down to the South Shore for camping and adventures in nature. She chose to join the LIC program because she enjoys many areas within medicine, and is hoping that exposure to rural medicine will help her make a more informed decision about what she'd like to pursue in the future. Currently, she has interest in both family medicine and internal medicine.

In her free time, you’ll find Tanaka hiking, at the gym, baking, camping, spending time with friends, or reading a good book.

Tanaka is so excited to have the opportunity to live here for a year and be part of the community! If you see Tanaka in the hospital, the clinic or in the community, please extend a big South Shore welcome!

Know a student who wants to work in healthcare?

Nova Scotia Health’s Student Engagement team is hosting a free virtual session to help students explore college and university programs in Nova Scotia that lead to in-demand healthcare careers.

Students will learn about the differences between diplomas and degrees, how to choose programs that lead to employment, and discover rewarding healthcare paths they may not have considered. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to attend or share with the high school students in their lives.

WELCOME ALLISON!

We are so lucky to have six new Dalhousie Medical School LIC students joining us to learn and practice rural healthcare for the next year. Let's get to know them better:

Originally from Ontario, Alli grew up in Texas, and has now called the East Coast home for 15 years. She completed a BA in Psychology at Mount Allison and a Masters of Occupational Therapy at Dalhousie. Working as an OT in the community, Alli saw how many people lacked a primary care provider, which inspired her to pursue medicine. She is thrilled to be part of the South Shore LIC program this year!

Alli is especially interested in family medicine and the lasting relationships family doctors can build with their patients. Outside of medicine, she enjoys gardening, baking and exploring the outdoors with her husband and their two young children.

She and her family are excited to become part of the South Shore community! If you see Alli in the hospital, the clinic or in the community, please extend a big South Shore welcome!
