Happy Fantastic Friday!

This week, after digging ourselves out from the snowstorm on Monday, we decided a community adventure was just what we needed. Like many people, we enjoy shopping, meeting up with friends, and exploring new places 😊

We like to try new things that help us develop skills or discover abilities through experiences. We like how staff encourage us to learn through doing as we prepare for community integration.

Recently, a person served asked to help with a remodeling project in her ARC house. Staff provided the tools and instructions while supporting hands on learning 🔧🔨🪚

At the Hub downtown, a person supported in community, baked her own birthday cake from scratch to share with friends 🎂

In the community, we appreciate places like HB Studios, where we can see, touch, and examine sensory abilities at the Quinn Sensory Room. 💡🫧 Shopping allows us to choose items for our hobbies, food, and items that bring us comfort. We contribute to the local economy through our purchases while learning how to budget our money 💰 When we meet up with friends for coffee, we are socializing, connecting with others, and making a difference ☕️🍪

We look forward to seeing you in the community 😀

Fun Nova Scotian Fact! :)

Nearly twenty years ago, in 2007, Pink Shirt Day in Canada was created by two Central Kings High School students in Berwick, Nova Scotia. Grade 12 students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after a ninth-grade student was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt on the first day of school.

Pink Shirt Day is observed on the last Wednesday of February, to bring awareness of harmful bullying in schools and communities. Wearing a pink shirt on Pink Shirt Day is a meaningful way to stand in solidarity with those experiencing bullying and send the message that bullying will not be tolerated.

At Balsam, we celebrate diverse and unique abilities. We believe everyone has value and offer their own perspective on experiences.

We stand in unity against bullying and show our commitment through our "pinkness". 🎀

Here, we have grabbed several managers wearing their rosy pinks, and Cassidy and Lori, Intensive Planning Support Coordinators from Department of Opportunities and Social Development (Disability Support Program).

Happy Wintery Wednesday!

The management team at Balsam want to take a moment to give well deserved praise and shout out to our FABULOUS STAFF FAMILY! A simple "Thank you" seems inadequate for the the dedication you all provide to persons served.

During the snow storm, your teamwork and commitment to supporting individuals was nothing short of remarkable. Thank you for pulled extra shifts, staying overnight so you could provide care when co-workers were unable to make it to work, and stepping up your already spectacular A Game! The people we support never missed a beat in their routine or care because of your authentic compassion and devotion ❤️

At Balsam, we believe unity and pulling together makes a stronger team and organization. Individually, we are pretty great....together, we are exceptional 🤛👏

As we come together after a snow/ice storm that may leave a few of us, and our neighbors stuck, it's a great time to remember how fortunate we are. We may not have much sunshine at the moment but in a few short months, we will enjoy Canada's ocean playground 💙

No matter what we have or do not have, what matters is how we come together and how we treat others. Kindness matters. You matter.

At Balsam, we like to remind ourselves and others of a few simple things.....

Team Canada played with grit and heart, the way we are made 🇨🇦🏒

The game today may not have been the outcome we wished for, but the Canadian athletes made us proud 👏

We are Nova Scotians with hockey in our veins. We are Canadians who LOVE our winter sports!

Here, at one of our Small Community Living Options Homes, staff and residents come together to cheer on their favorite team.....and share in the outcome😪 No worries, we celebrate anyway because we are fans and fans never give up 🥰

What a Fabulous Friday at Balsam!

Today is National Care Givers Day, where we recognize the support and excellent care our staff provide to persons served. It doesn't matter what the job is, all staff provide care and compassion in a variety of ways, and we celebrate that 🎉

The management team at Balsam provided lunch to all staff as our thanks for their commitment to the health and well being of people served. YOU ARE APPRECIATED 👏 ❤️ With several programs, providing support, we have a diverse staff with extraordinary skills.

The ARC provides a safe space for people to call home with 24/7 clinical and residential support to meet complex needs. Staff are often considered family to those who live at the ARC 🫂

Small Community Living Options Homes provide a level of independent living while providing 24/7 support in the home to meet the needs of those living together (up to four people) as they learn how to live in the community and transition to full independent living when ready to do so.

Independent Living Support is a program for those living independently in their own apartment or with roommates in the community of their choosing. This program provides support staff to ensure people learn life skills as they navigate independent living.

LITES (Learning Independence Through Everyday Skills) is our quality day program, providing support and skill building to those in community and living in one of Balsam's home programs.

And of course....we are Winter Olympics fans! 🥉🏅🏆⛸️🎿🏒 We are TEAM 🇨🇦 🍁 We are Nova Scotians, so we love our winter sports! We are cheering for our Nova Scotian athletes as they represent us in their chosen sport.

Do you enjoy going out to eat with your significant other? We do too 🥰

Do you enjoy choosing what you want for lunch, even if it comes in a bucket? We do too 🦪🍤

We enjoy lunch dates, ordering food, making conversation with wait staff, and being in the community every day.

While in the community, we learn about food/menu choices, budgeting, tipping, and social norms of restaurant services.

We look forward to seeing you soon while enjoying a meal in the community 😀
