Respite care matters. It offers individuals and families the support they needβ€”whether for a short break or during times of transition. At Balsam, respite is built around comfort, dignity, and trust.

Well, thankfully the "Nor'easter" decided to take an eastward turn, giving us a winter break β„οΈπŸŒ¬

Do you remember the days when you enjoyed playing in the snow, feeling the coldness on your hands or face? Do you remember adults reminding you not to eat yellow snow? How about the days when snow was used in childhood science experiments, like melting times, what could be found in snow that can't be seen with the naked eye, or how snow is created from the clouds?⏳️🌨

Well, at Balsam, as adults, we still find delight in playing with snow. We are in Nova Scotia afterall β„οΈβ˜ƒοΈ When we can't go outside due to dangerously cold temps and wind chill, we bring the snow inside πŸ˜€ We still like to feel the sudden burst of cold on our tongue, like a snow cone. We enjoy the coolness on our hands as we build mini snowmen or others shapes. And we always have fun learning and relearning how snow is a marvelous part of nature.

We are creative artists and science enthusiasts at Balsam πŸ”¬πŸŒ€πŸŽ¨

No shadow can dim the warmth we create together.

At Balsam, we enjoy community outings with a few friends. We choose what we like, and we like bowling 🎳

We bowl inside the hallways of the ARC often but sometimes we choose to up our game at the big leagues 😎

While in the community, with supports, we engage in meaningful activities that provide exercise for good health and choices that bring us joy 😊

If see us in the community, be sure to say "Hi" because we love making new friends 🧑

What does your birthday mean to you?

Some people celebrate birthdays while others choose not to for various reasons. And that's ok because at Balsam, we celebrate each day as extraordinary πŸ˜€

At Balsam, we leave birthday celebrations up to the individual. If they would like to celebrate, we are more than happy to join them πŸŽˆπŸŽ‰ We believe everyone's day of birth is unique to them and they choose how to acknowledge their day 😊 We are just happy to have them spending their days with us.

Fun facts.....(Googled 😁)

1) August is the most common birth month in the US and Canada, followed by July and September. These are great months to have birthdays in this part of the world, with the weather being nice and days still being long enough to enjoy outside activities.

2) Most common birthdays are in September...9th, 12th, and 19th. Is this your birthday? πŸŽ‚

3) The month with the least number of birthdays is February. This could be due to it being the shortest month of the year, even with a Leap Year. Don't worry, it's only the month that isn't popular, you're still a superstar ✨️ 😎

4) The top five rarest birthdays are...
December 24th and 26th, January 1st and 2nd, and July 4th. That means Christmas Day is more popular than Christmas Eve and Boxing Day! Do you have a birthday on of these rare days? That makes you a real rare gem πŸ’Ž

Today, we celebrated a birthday with a young man who loves a party πŸ₯³ He invited many friends and staff, who stopped by between breaks and shifts. He wanted everyone to know how much he appreciates each day at Balsam.

When it's too cold to enjoy ourselves outside, we get creative and cozy. We enjoy a little TV time and conversation with friends, coloring with staff, and buying pop from the on-site convenience store. Independent choices matter to us and we like to express our unique abilities in a variety of ways. πŸŽ¨πŸ–Ό

Today, LITES (Learning Independence Through Everyday Skills) was busy with work- shredding paper for local businesses, learning to write/spell/read using picture cards, researching favorite topics to talk about, and chatting with staff. There is something to learn each day, new skills to explore, and old skills to keep sharpened. πŸ“•πŸ–βœοΈ

At Balsam, we grow like beautiful flowers through daily nurturing, compassion, and the love of those around us. 🌺🌻

Sometimes it’s the everyday moments that say the most. A shared meal, a familiar place, and a smile that says β€œI’m happy right now.” These are the moments of community living we love to see.

In Nova Scotia, we are built a little different. We are resilient and winter ready because ice is kind of our thing πŸ˜€ Ice hockey, that is.

We hear there is a storm brewing, and that means it's time for stocking up on snacks and treatsπŸ«πŸ«“ We love shopping outings, buying what we choose, and perhaps finding a card for someone special πŸ˜‰

At the Hub, located downtown, we enjoy baking together with friends πŸžπŸŽ‚

Shopping helps with understanding fiscal responsibilities as we learn independent living skills in the community. Baking with friends supports our social independence while building meaningful relationships.

Be safe in the snow ❄️ Don't forget the extra snacks 🍿🧁🍩 and make each day an adventure πŸ˜€

We hear the weather may be "wintery" this weekend, so we wanted to be sure our weekend started before the snow πŸ˜€ ❄️

At Balsam, we know what we like, and we like chicken! Dawn, one of our dedicated and long-term staff is great at taking us on adventures and allowing us to make choices in what brings us joy in the community. Today, we enjoyed a ride to Liverpool for some Dixie Lee Chicken and fun! πŸ—πŸŸ

We hope your Friday is filled with lots of fantastic fun!
