Running related injury (RRI) is a barrier to participation for recreational runners. Peterson et al. (2022) completed a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating relationships between RRI with biomechanical and musculoskeletal variables. What is a review and what are biomechanical and musculoskeletal variables? A review is a study that looks at a lot of studies for a theme because individual studies may have different conclusions. Biomechanical and musculoskeletal variables include things like range of motion, strength of the various muscles, static foot position like flat foot, etc. So what was the outcome? None of the things like range of motion, strength, whether your flat foot were directly associated with injury. Take away - rather than thinking that your flat foot, glute weakness, tight hips, etc. are responsible for your injury, consider managing load in relation to your current capacity. What’s your current level of stress, how much are you running, how fast, etc.
