February 9-13 is Resident Doctor Awareness Week. This week raises awareness of who medical residents are, the importance of residency training, and the critical role these physicians play as health-care providers in our community.

Doctors who have completed their medical degree must then complete a residency program in their area of interest. For family medicine physicians this is two years. The residency program is created to give both hands-on experience and technical training to resident doctors in order to prepare them to become fully licensed physicians and practice without supervision.

In 2023 Dalhousie Medical School started a satellite family medicine residency program on the South Shore. Now in it's third year, the Halifax/South Shore residency site welcomed three new residents - Dr. Robin Lake (Lunemburg), Dr. Jasmine Eng (Liverpool) and Dr. Liam Redden (Liverpool). Drs. Lake, Eng and Redden will be spending the next two years completing their residency between Halifax and the South Shore, joining our second year family medicine residents Dr. Adrienne Borrie, Dr. Dennis Brown and Dr. Maya Venkatarman.

Doctors completing their residency program here have a unique opportunity to really get a taste for what a fantastic place the South Shore is to practice, live and play! And hopefully decide that this is where they want to practice when they finish.

In the next few days we will introduce you to our new family medicine residents, so stay tuned!

⭐ Municipal Awards and Reception - Community organizations are invited to nominate and send two representatives to the Municipal Reception to be held during Volunteer Week.
