Happy Winter Solstice! Whether you celebrate Yule, Saturnalia, the Solstice itself or a little bit of everything, today is a very special day for most Pagans!
Today marks the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day and the longest night. From this day until the middle of Summer, the days will grow longer and the nights will get shorter. Traditions vary quite a bit depending on the individual's practices, but very often themes include spending time with loved ones, looking forward to a new beginnings with the light returning to us, calling in prosperity and good health for the coming year, and blessing the hearth of your home.
In my household, we celebrate a mix of a few holidays. Kicking things off last night with Mother's Night, I spent time with my mother and my children spent time with theirs, all of us enjoying the family we have. Today we exchanged gifts on the Solstice itself, while on the 25th some gifts from "Santa" arrive (along with gifts explicitly for Christmas from family who don't celebrate Yule) so the children don't miss out with their friends from school talking about their experiences. I'll celebrate the twelve nights of Yule as the holiday progresses, and at the end I'll light my Yule Goat to mark the ending of the celebrations!
I would love to hear what plans you have for the holidays, and of course I'm always happy to answer questions as best I can too. Blessed Yuletide, and may your holidays be filled with joy! ππβοΈπ
