Ticks are still very active, even with the recent snowfall! One of our patients recently had a tick removed and sent for testing, coming back POSTIVE for the Lyme bacteria. We continue to have reports of ticks in the area, specifically Black Legged (Deer) Ticks, the species that can carry Lyme disease. Deer Ticks prefer the cool weather of fall and spring, and aren't put off by frost or a single snowfall. If the temperature at ground level is 0C or warmer, ticks are active! We strongly recommend year-long tick prevention, especially if you and your dog spend time in forests, trails or fields. Contact us today to pick up your pet's tick prevention!

Sweet little Cookie came for a visit last week and wants to remind everyone that November is Senior Pet Month! As a senior herself, Cookie understands the importance of regular checkups for pets in their senior years. We consider dogs to be seniors at 7-8 years and cats at around 10 years of age. Regular exams, blood and urine testing are important to monitor health and catch early signs of diseases and age related degenerative changes. call us today or visit our website to schedule your pet's Senior Health Check-up!

Rounding out RVT month is our RVT Sarah! We were so excited to have Sarah join us earlier this year. She brings a wealth of experience from her time at her previous clinics, sharing this knowledge with our clients and any students we may have in the clinic. She loves surgery and can usually be found monitoring a patient, taking a blood sample, or preparing for a procedure. She is also a cat mom of two and will try to sneak a snuggle from all kittens that walk through the door! Say hi to Sarah next time you are at the clinic!

RVT month continues with another one of our fantastic technicians. It is probably fair to say Alison is a bit of a crazy cat lady! These 3 adorable kittens were born this summer to the sweet mama cat Alison rescued, and mama cat plus the kittens all found homes within her family! Here at the clinic Alison brings a lot of experience, from general practices and emergency clinics. After a lot of time working in high stress emergency clinics, Alison is happy to be able to spend some time with pets at their wellness visits and support owners throughout their pet's lives! She brings a wealth of knowledge and a cheerful presence to the practice! Make sure to say hi next time you see Alison around the clinic!

RVT month continues, and now we are sharing our wonderful technician Katie! With a bright smile and calm demeanor, Katie is always there to hand out extra treats or give a relaxing snuggle to our patients. Katie has been a huge help with our RVT students, taking them under her wing and showing them the ropes, allowing them to learn in a positive and supportive environment! Don't forget to say hi to Katie next time you see her at the clinic!

October is 🩺RVT Month🩺, so we will be highlighting our amazing technicians in the days ahead!
To start, we would like to introduce Samantha, an RVT student spending time with us for one of her external rotations! Samantha is currently in her second year of the RVT program at Sheridan. Part of the program involves spending time at different clinics to practice hands on technical skills, spend time communicating with clients and learning the ins and outs of daily veterinary practice. If you see Samantha around the clinic, be sure to say hi!

Here at Orchard we love being able to have students of all types in the clinic to share our love of veterinary medicine and help prepare the next generation of technicians and veterinarians alike for this career! ❤️

Sometimes you have a day in veterinary medicine that presents you with really unexpected challenges. Tuesday afternoon a man came into the clinic concerned because he thought he could hear a cat meowing in his car. Our team went out to the parking lot and sure enough, a little black and white cat was stuck in the engine. Dr
Stewart was able to give the cat pain medication and sedation while he was trapped, and then with the help of the fire department, the car was lifted and then the wheel was removed so we could finally access the cat. Although he was really tightly wedged in between parts, Dr. Stewart was able to remove him from the car. The little cat was assessed in the clinic, and amazingly his microchip identified him as one of our own patients! He has serious burns and will need to be monitored very closely as he heals, but we were able to reunite him with his family who had been searching for him since the previous day. It was a harrowing day, but sending a cat home with his thankful family makes it all worthwhile! Thank you to the Burlington Fire Department for their help, and to the good samaritan who came to the clinic and let his car be taken apart to save a cat! And thank you to our amazing team for really going the extra mile for our patients!!

Little Louis came for his very first visit this week! He was an absolute star, giving lots of kisses and snuggles to everyone! He was also the most brave boy for his vaccines and his nail trim! With lots of treats he didn't even notice as RVT Sarah gave him his pedicure! Way to go Louis!
