How can you prevent falls? 🤔

Movement & exercise are a big piece!

⭐️ meeting recommended exercise standards is a good place to start

⭐️ incorporating balance, coordination and agility take it up a notch

🔥 start where you’re at and work your way up - if you’re not currently exercising regularly, start small and increase gradually

🔥 if you’re exercising regularly but not incorporating any balance specific training, add some in! Try standing with one foot in front of the other, or on one foot

Have you worked on your balance yet today?

Every little bit counts and helps to prevent falls 🙌

Try:
🔹Tandem stance (one foot right in front of the other)
🔹Tandem walking (like you were in a tight rope)
🔹Standing on one foot

If you’re feeling unsteady, hold onto the counter or a wall.

If you need more challenge try standing on a pillow or with your eyes closed.

🚨 PILATES FOR OSTEOPOROSIS MODIFICATIONS 🦴

There are so many benefits to Pilates!

💪 strength
🤸‍♀️ flexibility
⚖️ balance
🧘 mind body connection

Just to name a few 😉

But for anyone with osteoporosis or low bone density, there are some considerations 🤔

Forward flexion of the spine (rounding, crunching) is one of the movements that needs to be modified for those with osteoporosis because of the forces that it puts through the spine.

That doesn’t mean you need to avoid pilates - it just means that you need to modify certain exercises 🙌

Instead of flexing (rounding) through the spine, keep your back in neutral - for the double and single leg stretch that means keeping the head and neck on the floor.

You’ll still get a GREAT core workout 🙌

❓ Can exercise help prevent falls?

YES! Absolutely it can!

💥 Meeting recommended exercises standards (150 mins of moderate - vigorous activity per week) indirectly helps reduce the risk of falls by preventing deconditioning, frailty, sarcopenia and positively impacting cardiovascular health

💥 Strength is a component of balance, so including strength training will positively impact balance and will help keep bones strong, making them less likely to fracture

💥 Including balance training, agility & coordination exercises improves your bodies ability to recover from and respond to perturbances in balance which helps reduce the risk of falls

💪 If you're already exercising and meeting the recommendations, you're on a good path to preventing falls!

💪 If you're not exercising regularly yet, there's no time like the present to start!

In either case, our team is here to help make sure your program includes the components that will help reduce your risk of a fall!

➡️ Book in for a Falls Risk Physiotherapy Assessment and our team will identify your risk factors and create an individualized program to address them
