For over a decade, 78-year-old Charlie Hicks was a fixture at the Shrimp Basket restaurant in Pensacola, Florida, visiting twice a day for his signature order of gumbo with light rice and no crackers. His routine was so reliable that the staff considered him family, even throwing him a birthday party. However, concern grew when Hicks suddenly stopped appearing for his daily meals. After he missed several days and failed to answer his phone, chef Donnell Stallworth and staff leader Denise Galloway decided to check on him at his apartment during a work shift. Upon arriving, they heard a faint cry for help and discovered Hicks lying on the floor, where he had been stranded for days after a fall that left him with two broken ribs and severe dehydration.

Following his rescue, the restaurant staff went above and beyond to ensure Hicks would never be in such a vulnerable position again. While he recovered in the hospital and later in rehab, Stallworth continued to hand-deliver his favorite gumbo to his bedside. To provide a long-term solution, the Shrimp Basket team helped Hicks move into a new apartment located directly next to the restaurant, even helping him set up new appliances. This move allowed the staff to keep a watchful eye on their "adopted grandfather" while making it easier for him to maintain his beloved daily routine. Hicks has since returned to his favorite table, a testament to the life-saving power of simple community connection.
