Have you heard? Since last month, June 6th, BC has expanded opioid agonist treatment medication (OAT) coverage under their Plan Z universal coverage plan.

What does this mean? OAT medications are now easily accessible for those in BC with an active medical services plan (MSP)!

Why is this important? Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) medication-assisted treatment is a method for those struggling with opioid-use disorder. Opening up its accessibility makes treatment significantly easier for those seeking it, helping the province tackle the ongoing opioid epidemic.

The recent introduction of Xylazine in Canada's toxic illicit drug supply has contributed greatly to overdose deaths within the country, and is making the overdose epidemic more dangerous than it already is. But what exactly makes it so dangerous?

For starters, it's used as a horse tranquilizer - 400 times more potent than ketamine and causes significant health concerns like decreased heartrate and decreased blood pressure.

Learn more about Xylazine's impacts in Canada and how it works in today's post.

June 17th marks the 65th year of the Ironworkers Memorial Disaster, the devastating incident that killed 19 construction workers in British Columbia.

On June 17th, 1958, the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge collapsed during construction. The disaster was accredited to poor site conditions and work safety, and the bridge was renamed the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge to commemorate those who lost their lives in the incident.

Since that incident, many have advocated for workplace safety. There are also several ways you can commemorate or pay your respects, such as attending a ceremony or wearing a memorial pin.

As of April 14th, 2023, the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Dr. Bonnie Henry released a joint statement, declaring British Columbia's seventh-year anniversary on the public health emergency for toxic drug-related overdoses.

This marks the seventh year since the overdose crisis was declared an official health emergency - and the toxic drug supply within the province has been made even more so during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In part of their statement, they stated that "We know there is much to do. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all front-line workers and peers who have made heroic efforts every single day to support those in distress and crisis."

"Our goal is to always be there with the support and care people need."

Do you remember our White Paper and Forum event? From the report, CIRP has determined the effects substance use is having across the construction industry - and the numbers are in.

Up to $847 million annually is being lost due to substance use, made up of a loss from workers reporting being unable to come into work due to hangovers and withdrawal symptoms.

Assuming an estimated loss of $700 per worker at 712,500 days lost, plus an additional $400 daily for 870,000 hungover days, this is an estimated cost of $847 million per year due to substance use and mental health-related issues.

The numbers are clear - and the takeaway is that clear industry solutions, education, and awareness are necessary to tackle the issue.

Happy June! Did you know that June 3rd is National Health and Fitness Day?

Today represents a national challenge to make Canada the fittest nation on Earth. Everyone is encouraged to participate by getting any form of physical exercise - whether that's going for a walk, running, or playing sports with friends and family.

At CIRP, we would also like to stress the importance of physical health in its relationship to mental health - and that physical health should be considered in the context of substance use.

We'd particularly like to stress the recently updated alcohol consumption guidelines from the CCSA - please refer to their guidelines for further information (You can check the link in our bio for an updated report!)

Let's get fit! Take a walk today, meet some friends, play some catch, or enjoy some sunshine!
