(Content Warning: Mentions of suicidal intent)

While AI language models are trained on millions of interactions, they lack human intuition.

According to researchers at Stanford University, AI bots can harbour deep stigmas against complex mental health conditions, and terrifyingly, they frequently failed to recognize subtle cues of severe distress or suicidal ideation during testing.

Therapy is fundamentally about connection, and finding safety in the presence of another person. A computer cannot hold space for human experiences.

It’s 2:00 AM, AI is free, and it's right there. 📲

We are living in a profound loneliness epidemic.
Finding a therapist can present many challenges at times, and when an AI chatbot offers instant, perfectly worded, affirming responses in the middle of the night, it feels like a lifeline.

Douglas Mennin, Professor of Clinical Psychology at Columbia, notes that AI’s validating quality is a "huge part of relational support," especially when people aren't getting that affirmation elsewhere.

But here is the danger of "pseudo-connection": ✋🏼

While these bots mimic human speech, relying on them can actually lead to further isolation. Research shows that heavy users of AI companions report increased levels of loneliness over time.

An algorithm cannot genuinely care for you. As humans, we are wired for connection, and true healing in therapy happens in the safe presence of another human being. Don't settle for a coded program when you are suffering. We are wired to heal through real relationship. 🌿

Generative AI is incredible at many things, but therapy isn’t one of them. 🛑

While the illusion of a human-like conversation can be comforting, experts at are cautioning against the rise of AI chatbots for emotional support.

One major risk? AI is programmed to build trust by offering affirmation. These models can often deliver completely incorrect— and sometimes clinically unsafe— information with absolute certainty. For someone in acute distress, AI's "people-pleasing" tendencies can accidentally validate harmful thoughts or behaviours as it lacks clinical boundaries.

Therapy isn't just about having someone agree with you; it's a collaborative human relationship, where a trained professional offers safety, support, and opportunities for genuine growth.

Your mental health deserves the safety of a human connection. 🤝🌿

Our Burnaby office is moving soon!

As of April 18th, we will be moving to a new office in the South Burnaby/Edmonds area.

This move marks a significant milestone for us - after more than 20 wonderful years in our Burnaby office - and we are excited to be stepping into a new chapter. While our address is changing, the heart of our practice remains exactly the same. You can continue to expect the same high-quality mental health support from the team you know and trust. We look forward to welcoming both familiar and new faces into our new space.

As always, we are so delighted to be here with you on your journey. ✨

Big emotions often signal great vulnerability beneath the surface. When your partner is upset, try listening for the vulnerability beneath the anger.

When possible, respond to the subtext, not the surface complaint.

Thank you for following along as we explored how to tune into the "subtext" of your conflicts. We know that jumping straight into raw vulnerability can feel incredibly scary. Practicing this 'subtext' exercise is meant to act as a stepping stone to bridge that gap.

As you consistently meet each other with safety and attunement, we hope taking that leap into vulnerability becomes a little easier—and eventually, feels entirely like second nature. ✨

Let's grow together. 🌱
