The B.C. government's Provincial Rural Retention Incentive (PRRI) program has been critical in keeping health care workers in rural and remote communities.

HEU members shared their stories about the difference this incentive program has made in their lives. Hillary Budzinski-Stead, an HEU member at the Rotary Manor local, is one of these workers.

“My residents are what keeps me going to my job. I work in memory care. And people with dementia hold kind of a special place in my heart. Even though dementia is such a horrible disease, I find that people with dementia tend to be happier because they’re just living in the moment. They’re not stressed out by world events and what’s going on in the news. So when I walk onto my unit, I'm able to kind of leave everything at the door, and I'm just there for them.

I actually moved to the north from the Island because of incentives like PRRI. Many of us rely on it, even though we know it’s an incentive and not guaranteed. When you live in a small community, things like emergency rooms shutdowns once or twice a month means sometimes we have to drive four hours to the nearest hospital. That gets expensive with gas prices.”

On March 4, B.C.'s Labour Minister Jennifer Whiteside introduced Bill 10, the Labour Standards Amendment Act.

The bill would amend the Employment Standards Act and the Temporary Foreign Worker Protection Act and, if passed, would increase opportunities for early dispute resolution, make wage recovery for workers more efficient, and improve clarity and maintain fairness in investigations for employers and workers.

The global COVID-19 pandemic that started in 2020 turned the world and our lives upside down. The impacts of that pandemic are still being deeply felt today.

Health care workers quickly became the heroes of this international crisis, putting themselves at risk to care and support for people in their communities, particularly elders who were particularly vulnerable to the virus.

Today, we commemorate all those we lost during this COVID-19 pandemic and recognize the health care workers who were on the front lines of public safety and carried us through the crisis.

We are aware of reports of a fire at an assisted living site where HEU members work in Mission.

Our thoughts are with the residents, families, and health care workers affected.

We are grateful to the first responders and staff who are working to keep everyone safe.

We continue to monitor the situation and will share updates when more information becomes available.

HEU members proudly celebrated International Women's Day (IWD) at different events yesterday.

The union was honoured to bring greetings to Migrante BC’s International Working Women’s Day Event, joining many other Filipino and ally community groups in building solidarity for women and migrant workers in B.C. and abroad.

HEU members, including HEU's Women, Non-Binary and Two-Spirit Standing Committee, also attended the Vancouver & District Labour Council's annual IWD dinner, joining hundreds of women and gender-diverse labour and community activists to celebrate the labour movement's achievements in the fight for women's and gender rights, and to affirm that a woman's place is in the labour movement!

International Women's Day is a day to celebrate and honour the cultural, social, economic and political achievements of women.

It is also a day to recommit to the work building true gender equity at our worksite, in our communities and globally.

Gender-based discrimination affects the social, economic, cultural and political rights of women, Two-Spirit, trans, non-binary, and gender diverse people, and negatively impacts our global communities. HEU stands in solidarity with women, Two-Spirit, trans, non-binary, and gender diverse people for an equitable and just society.

HEU has a long and proud history of fighting for gender equity. Health care jobs are overwhelmingly taken by women workers. The fight for better working conditions in health care is a fight for better working conditions for women. From pay equity to fighting health care privatization contracting out, HEU members have been at the forefront defending women and gender rights at the workplace.

HEU was proud to sponsor West Coast LEAF's annual Equality Breakfast this morning in celebration of International Women's Day on March 8. West Coast LEAF has worked for decades to defend the legal, social and economic rights of women and non-binary people. This work is especially critical during these challenging times when women and gender rights are under attack.

The health care sector is dominated by women workers, and advancing women and gender rights means advancing health care workers' rights.

The event featured award-winning Cree author Tracey Lindberg whose powerful words reminded us that: love is a springboard for change and that we exist because we love.
