There’s this thing being regurgitated as if it’s original thought and it’s starting to become quite annoying and reminding me of when people were trying to tell others not to vote for Kamala but then didn’t have a plan or idea on what would be better.
Do y’all remember that?
It was just a bunch of people over-intellectualizing and living vicariously through theory they didn’t help create but read about in a book. Through their messaging they discouraged voter turnout by those who previously felt hopeful but then became embarrassed to want to vote for that lady so they stayed home.
I know y’all remember that. It might feel like it was 35 years ago but it hasn’t even been a full year yet. Oh, my gosh. You guys have to remember that. Their posts spread like wildfire right along with apathy. Soon all your faves were saying nearly identical things.
It was a wild time.
What’s even wilder is that it’s happening again with the No Kings protests. Suddenly the talking point sounds like it’s coming from provocateurs sent to sow discontent within a unified movement.
The questions, “what’s next,” “what’s the end goal,” “what’s the point” have been floating around since a few days before the protests by people who have seemingly never bothered to go to see what exactly is being discussed.
I’ve heard there’s no common goal as if being heard isn’t a goal. As if showing solidarity isn’t a goal. As if finding community isn’t a goal.
These questions are asked without offering solutions on where things could improve. People are criticizing the method without an offer to assist or lead.
Critiques without solutions are just meaningless noise meant to discourage.
Don’t let the noise discourage you. If you feel something is missing from your local protests, offer up your skills and ideas. Our local protest had voter registration, community mutual aid information and other community resources readily available. They also spoke about community resources and how to get more involved to help each other as things move further into fascism.
Isn’t that the next step? Community mutual aid so we can get networks flowing properly as people talk about doing a general strike? You can’t do a general strike without community mutual aid. You can’t even think about it.
So if your fave is asking any of these questions, please ask them to pitch in their skills. Ask them how they’d do it differently and why they aren’t contacting organizers to see how they can work with them to get these things done.
Activism isn’t everyone doing the same thing perfectly. Activism is knowing everyone has their role. Activism is a choir holding a long note, everyone stops for small breaths at different times so the note sounds continuous. The No Kings protests are just one part of the note, so which of these folks are going to pick up the note so it continues to be sustained?
No Kings has the optics. It has the demand for the American people to be heard. It has the hope.
Who has the next link in the chain that will get us all closer to stopping the administration from the harm they’re causing?
Remember folks, we are all we have. The government is not paying out food stamps/EBT next month. WIC already cut funds this month, next month babies may be going without formula. Communities will be hurting and hungry. We need to either help come up with solutions or look for those offering them.
