Healing is not only about feeling better.

Often it involves becoming more aware of parts of ourselves that were once pushed out of awareness.

Psychology often refers to these as “shadow” aspects — emotions, traits, or impulses that were not safe to express at some point in our lives.

Anger.
Grief.
Fear.
Even healthy needs or boundaries.

Over time, the nervous system learns to suppress these experiences in order to maintain safety or connection.

But healing invites us to gently bring awareness to these hidden parts with curiosity rather than judgment.

Because often within what we have rejected are important pieces of our vitality, authenticity, and strength.

Wholeness does not come from eliminating our shadow.

It comes from learning to integrate it.

Many people begin their healing journey by trying to understand their past.

Insight can be incredibly valuable.

But trauma often lives not only in our memories — it lives in the nervous system.

This is why someone may understand their story, yet still feel their body react with anxiety, shutdown, or emotional overwhelm.

Somatic experiencing focuses on helping the nervous system gradually experience safety and regulation.

Over time, this can shift patterns that once felt automatic.
When the body begins to feel safer, new responses become possible.
Healing often deepens from there.

Many people reach a point in their healing journey where they say:

“I understand where this comes from…
but I still react the same way.”

This can feel confusing and discouraging.

But it’s actually very common.

Insight is important.
Understanding our story matters.

But trauma is not only stored as memory.

It is also stored as patterns in the nervous system.

The body may still respond with anxiety, shutdown, hypervigilance, or people-pleasing — even when the mind understands the past.

This is why many people eventually explore somatic approaches to healing.

Because real change often happens when the nervous system begins to experience safety in new ways.

Your nervous system processes thousands of pieces of information every second.

Most of that information never reaches conscious thought.

Instead, it shows up as sensation:
a contraction, an ease, a pull, a hesitation.

This is often called somatic knowing.

But trauma, conditioning, and people-pleasing can disconnect us from this signal.

Somatic work helps rebuild trust in the body’s cues.

Not as impulsive reactions,
but as grounded internal guidance.

When the nervous system feels safer,
the body’s wisdom becomes easier to hear.

This isn’t about saying one approach is better than the other.

Talk therapy can be incredibly valuable !

But many people reach a point where they think:
“I understand why I do this… but my body / my system still reacts.”

That’s where somatic work can help.

Because healing trauma almost always requires working with the nervous system — not just the mind.

When the body feels safer,
new responses become possible.
