🌲 Managing Tic Disorders with CBIT 🧠

Did you know that Tic Disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions involving sudden, rapid, and repetitive movements or vocalizations? Tics can range from mild to severe and often impact a person's quality of life.

The great news is that there are effective, first-line treatments available!

Introducing Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT): a structured, specialized therapy based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBIT is designed to help reduce the frequency and intensity of tics and improve overall functioning.

The Core Components of CBIT:

1. Tic Awareness Training: Learn to identify your personal triggers and patterns so you can anticipate and respond more helpfully to your symptoms.
2. Competing Response Training: Practice a physical action that is incompatible with the tic, gradually helping to replace the tic behavior.
3. Relaxation Techniques: Stress can often worsen tics. Techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness help manage stress and create a calmer state, reducing the likelihood of tics.
4. Family and Caregiver Education: Recovery is a team effort! Educating those around you fosters an encouraging and understanding environment for growth.

Ready to explore CBIT for yourself or a loved one?

Contact us today to get booked in with Melissa Channon, our CBIT specialized practitioner!

This November, let's step off the treadmill of perfectionism.

The truth is, true healing and growth don't require us to be flawless; they require us to be present and compassionate. The quiet, darker days of late autumn are a beautiful reminder that important work is happening even when we can't see itβ€”like a seed taking root deep in the earth.

You don't have to be "all better" right now. You just have to be "good enough" to keep showing up for yourself. Choose self-compassion today and trust the process. You are doing important work.

✨ Save this post to remind yourself to pause and choose compassion this week.

10/24/2025

Dealing with OCD can feel overwhelming, but there is hope. The gold standard treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).

How does ERP help?

ERP works by gradually exposing you to the triggers (fears or obsessions) in a safe environment while, at the same time, preventing you from performing your usual compulsive rituals. This process helps your brain learn to see the triggers as less threatening, effectively breaking the OCD cycle!

This therapy has a few key benefits:

It reduces anxietyβ€”over time, your anxiety won't climb as high or last as long.

It breaks the OCD cycle by showing you that you can resist the urge to perform the ritual.

It increases self-efficacy and your confidence in your ability to manage your OCD symptoms.

Exposure in ERP works in one of three ways:

In vivo: Confronting real-life triggers with your therapist.

Imaginal: Thinking about or replaying the obsessive thought or scenario in your mind.

Interoceptive: Focusing on the physical sensations of anxiety to become more comfortable with them.

Curious about ERP and OCD? Reach out today to get started on your journey to mental wellness!

Even the biggest emotions don't last forever. Your job is to breathe, be the captain of your body, and choose the next kind and helpful action.

We love this reminder! ⬆️

Teaching children to be the "captain" of their own emotional ship is one of the most powerful gifts we can give them. It shifts the focus from avoiding big feelings to learning how to navigate them with grace.

At Through The Woods Psychology, we help both kids and parents build that vital emotional toolkit. If you or your child need support finding your anchor, we are here to guide you.

Next time you feel overwhelmed or anxious, try the "I can tolerate this" mindset.

Anxiety is an uncomfortable emotion, but it doesn't have to control you. Imagine saying to yourself:

"Anxiety is uncomfortable, but I can handle it."
"I don't need to solve this feeling right now."
"Feeling anxious does NOT mean I'm in danger."

By learning to tolerate and accept anxietyβ€”instead of running from itβ€”we take its power away. This is a core part of building resilience and emotional freedom. You are stronger than you think.

Ready to explore a new way to relate to your anxiety? Visit our website to learn more about our services.
