Ethical Principle of Autonomy!

Decisions about health care interventions should be made based on the wishes, values and benefits of the client. This means that capable clients have the right to determine the course of their care out of respect for their own bodies and lives. If a client does not have the capacity to understand and appreciate all the information relevant to a particular decision, then respect for that client's autonomy should be represented by a substitute decision-maker.

In What You Do, Foot Care/Foot Wear.

Older adults want to live independently and active life. Falls are not natural part of aging. Feet that are healthy and pain free can help one to maintain good balance and prevent falls.

FACTS:

When we age, people can develop foot problems.

Our feet can warn us of other health problems like diabetes, arthritis and poor circulation.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET.

Check your feet daily, use a mirror or ask for help if you can not do it alone.

Look for cuts, blisters, swelling and calluses.

Keep the skin of your feet soft and smooth.

Keep your toenails trimmed, do not cut them too short.

See a health care professional if you have pain, diabetes or any changes to your feet.

Wear fall smart shoes.

BE FALLS SMART.

You can reduce your chances of falling!

Challenge your balance by controlling your movements. You can do tai chi, yoga or sports.

Build your strength by doing exercises for your legs and muscles.

Be active by doing activities you enjoy and love doing. Try to do 30 minutes of activity you love at least 5 times a week. Example, walk, dance, garden, bicycle or swim.

No matter what your abilities are today, you can improve your balance and strength.
