Our first Sickle Cell Impact Night was a success!

We had good conversations, great food, and wonderful company! We may have been a small group, but like they say in Jamaica, every mikkle makes a mukkle. This is just the start of something that will get bigger each year.

Syd worked with us to create an amazing painting. We tried to incorporate symbols that are meaningful to our work and community. We love the end result!

🧥Dress Warmly: Cold weather can trigger a crisis

💧Stay Hydrated: Bring a water bottle

🛑Take Breaks: Plan short routes and take breaks

📞Emergency Plan: Call someone in case of pain crisis

This tip is personal. My daughter is living with Sickle Cell Disease and I continually have to remind her and sometimes myself that this disease does not define her!

To all Warriors, you are wonderful, awesome, beautiful, strong, sweet, smart, handsome, intelligent, educated, kind, thoughtful, funny, joyful, vivacious, vibrant, visionary, trendy, talented, charismatic, charming, champions!

I could go on and on! What I really want you all to know is that you have sickle cell, sickle cell doesn’t have you!

These vaccines offer added protection against meningitis and pneumonia-two serious infections the Sickle Cell patients are more vulnerable to.

✅ These vaccines are part of AHS public health offerings

Winter is coming!

I know that the cold can wreak havoc on your body. But the key word here is “invest”. There are lots of good quality winter wear. Some can be pricey, but you are worth it!

Some materials to consider while shopping:

Wool 🐑

Down 🦆

Flannel/Fleece 🧥

And remember layering is your best bet to staying toasty!

Base layer: wicks moisture (merino wool, silk)
Middle layer: insulates (fleece, wool, down)
Outer layer: protects from wind and water (waterproof)

Winter is inevitable in Alberta, so why not be prepared and embrace the cold!

I found this out this year! Parents, you can ask your child’s nurse for a letter that will explain your child’s condition and how it may affect attendance etc. As well as any special accommodation that may have to be arranged. I am actually using it for my daughter’s school and the dentist!

Don’t hesitate to tell your care team what you need. They won’t know if you don’t say anything!
