Exciting news! I’m officially a PaRx provider, which means that I can prescribe one Adult Parks Canada Discovery Pass per month to a patient for whom cost could be a barrier to access our beautiful national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas.

I recommend time outdoors for almost all of my patients (kids AND adults) because it can:
🌲 reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels
🌲 reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease (in one study, sitting outside in the forest for 4 hours reduced blood pressure by over 10 points)
🌲 boost attention and memory
🌲 help you stay active
🌲 improve sleep
🌲 and so much more!

Excited to be able to share this with my patients. Thank you !

If you are struggling with bloating, IBS symptoms, diarrhea, constipation, or gas/flatulence, it’s time to get tested for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and intestinal methanogenic overgrowth (IMO).

SIBO and IMO are treatable conditions that can be at the root of common bothersome digestive symptoms. SIBO occurs when bacteria, like E. coli and Klebsiella, overgrow in the small intestine, resulting in diarrhea, gas/flatulence, and bloating. IMO is more common in those who have constipation. In more severe cases, both can result in certain vitamin deficiencies (like vitamin B12) and can also affect the way you absorb carbohydrate, fat, and protein.

We test for SIBO and IMO using an at-home lactulose breath test - available both at and .

I have had a burst of new patients scheduling lately who have never seen a functional medicine naturopathic doctor before. If you have never seen a naturopathic doctor, you are not alone! Here are the 5 things I do as your Naturopathic Doctor:⠀

1. I review your symptoms, medical history, and family history to help give us a full picture of your health. I spend 60 minutes with you during your initial visit and 30 minutes with you for follow up visits to make sure all of your questions are answered. ⠀
2. I ALWAYS discuss nutrition, movement, stress management, and sleep as part of your treatment plan.⠀
3. I order standard and in-depth specialized testing to help get to the root cause of your symptoms. ⠀
4. I provide guidance on supplements, like nutraceuticals and botanicals. For some of my patients, this means that I actually reduce the number of supplements that they are taking and work with them to optimize the dosages of what they are already taking. Some of my patients are on the right track with the supplements that they have begun to take, but often are WAY under-dosing and likely not getting a therapeutic effect. For others, we use supplements as a way to get them feeling better while we are working on addressing the underlying cause of their symptoms through nutrition and lifestyle changes. ⠀
5. I work collaboratively with your healthcare team. Prior to re-locating to Canada, I spent five years practicing in a primary care setting in the US, where I was able to prescribe medications, refer to specialists, order diagnostic testing & imaging AND talk to patients about the role that food, stress, sleep, and movement were playing in their health. So - I am not anti-conventional medicine or anti-natural medicine. I like to do what I can to bring all members of someone’s healthcare team together as we all have the same goal - to get you feeling better, regardless of the tools that are used. ⠀

More questions? I'm offering 15 minute complimentary meet & greet visits at both and

Q: Why am I so tired this time of year?⠀

A: It depends! As a functional medicine naturopathic doctor, I find that there are a number of factors that can play into your energy levels. ⠀

If you are feeling exhausted all of the time, that is absolutely worth investigating. It’s common to be fatigued, but it’s not normal. Here are 6 steps to figure out why you are so tired: ⠀

1. Check for underlying illnesses such as anemia, hormone imbalance (like thyroid disease), and blood sugar imbalance. Depending on your symptoms, we might also look for inflammatory conditions, infections (like mononucleosis), and sleep apnea. ⠀
2. Do you have sleep debt? Take your sleep seriously, friends! You are not functioning at your highest with 6 or less hours or sleep per night, even if you think you are one of those magical people who can exist on little sleep. It’ll catch up with you. Also, alcohol before bed isn’t doing your sleep quality any favours. ⠀
3. What about a nutrient deficiency? Iron, B12, and vitamin D deficiencies can all contribute to low energy. There are blood tests to look for all of these!⠀
4. Invest in your mental health. Depression, anxiety, and burnout can all show up as fatigue. ⠀
5. Check for HPA axis dysfunction (essentially your stress hormone response). If looking into steps 1-4 doesn’t give us any answers about your fatigue, I’ll often look at salivary cortisol levels throughout the day. Chronic stress ➡️ HPA axis dysfunction➡️ fatigue. ⠀
6. Pandemic life: need I say more?⠀

Certain medications and substances can also lead to fatigue. ⠀

German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) 🌼 is one of my top recommended herbs to include in your home medicinal botanical garden. It is in annual, which means that it will not survive the winter (especially in Calgary ❄️ ☃️ ) and will need to be planted yearly. The flowers are loved by pollinators AND are edible for humans. The flowers can be used fresh in salads, desserts, or drinks or can be dried and used as tea. Chamomile is calming for nervous minds, helpful for indigestion/gas/bloating, and even has research (PMID: 27912875) supporting its use for generalized anxiety disorder.

So, you are thinking about scheduling a meet & greet visit but are not sure what to ask. No problem! 🥁 🥁 🥁 (drum roll)... because here is a list of the top 3 questions I get in meet and greet visits:⠀

1. How long are the visits? Your first visit is 60 minutes long, which gives me plenty of time to learn all about you and your health. Follow up visits are typically 30 minutes, but can be shortened or extended depending on your needs.⠀

2. What happens during a first visit? In your first visit, I may make recommendations for standard blood work and in-depth specialized testing to help determine the cause of your symptoms. ⠀

3. What type of treatments do you recommend? Using nutrition, lifestyle changes, nutrients, and botanicals, together we create a plan to improve your health and help you meet your goals.

Ladies! Many of my patients come to see me for wellness exams because they want to spend more time digging into what they can do to keep themselves healthy. Wondering how frequently you need to come in for a general wellness checkup? ⠀

If you are under the age 49 with no chronic health conditions and no health concerns/questions, come in once every 1-3 years. Over age 50, come in yearly. ⠀

What do I do at a general check-up/wellness visit? Well, it varies. It depends on your age, gender, and risk factors. To help give you an idea of what is covered, you’ll find a list of topics that I chat with my patients about at their wellness visits below. Not all of these topics are touched on for every person, because not all will apply for every person.⠀

In office topics: ⠀
- Blood pressure screening ⠀
- Conversation around nutrition and exercise goals⠀
- Depression and anxiety screening⠀
- Vitamin/supplement/medication review (let's make sure that what you are taking is actually working for you!)⠀
- Stress management⠀
- Sleep⠀
- Alcohol and substance use⠀

Tests that may be discussed in a wellness exam:⠀
- Cholesterol panel (important if you smoke, have high blood pressure, diabetes, have a family history of heart disease, or are over the age of 45): this includes a total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides⠀
- Diabetes check (important if you have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, have a history of gestational diabetes or PCOS): this includes a fasting blood sugar and/or hemoglobin A1C (a measure of your blood sugar control over the past 3 months)⠀
- Anemia check (important if you are having heavy periods): this includes a CBC, ferritin, and iron studies⠀
- Vitamin D⠀
- STI screening: All adults should be tested at least once in their lives for HIV and Hepatitis C. You may also be due for regular gonorrhea and chlamydia screening depending on your age and risk factors.⠀
- Cancer screening: this includes breast cancer, colon cancer, and cervical cancer screening ⠀

This conversation takes longer than a 10 minute office visit. Expect a 30-60 minute conversation that is all about you and what you can do for your health. You are worth it.

Part 2 in the KIDS & COLDS series!

POV: Your kid has ANOTHER cold this year and you’re wondering when to make an appointment with your healthcare provider It's not normal if your kid is getting:
▪️ 6+ ear or respiratory tract infections within one year
▪️ 2+ serious sinus infections or pneumonias within one year
▪️ 4+ new ear infections within one year

Most of the time, the symptoms of the common cold will resolve on their own in time and improve in about 3-8 days. You should also make an appointment with your healthcare provider if:
▪️ Your child is younger than 3 months old and has cold symptoms
▪️ Your child is having difficulty feeding because of their congestion
▪️ Fever lasting longer than 3 days
▪️ Sore throat lasting longer than 5 days
▪️ Nasal discharge and congestion lasting longer than 2 weeks
▪️ Cough lasting longer than 3 weeks
▪️ Ear pain or fluid draining from their ear
▪️ Lots of pus in the eye
▪️ Fever that goes away for 24 hours and then returns
▪️ Your child is very fussy and cannot be calmed easily
▪️ Your child is very sleepy
▪️ Your child seems to be more sick to you
▪️ You have any other concerns or your child’s symptoms are severe

Don't have a healthcare provider that you trust or looking for a second opinion? Link in bio to schedule a 15 min consultation to see how functional medicine/naturopathic medicine can help.

Why do I make elderberry syrup for my family?⠀

▪️ It may reduce duration and severity of colds⠀
▪️ It may reduce duration of influenza (aka “the flu”)⠀
▪️ It may have help prevent influenza (although studies are mixed on this) ⠀
▪️ It may lower risk of influenza complications ⠀

It tastes yummy and my germ-y toddler likes it. It’s an every day staple in my house during cold and flu season. It also grows as a shrub up to 10 meters tall and I’m scheming to put an elderberry tree in my yard next year (because the idea of growing and making my own medicine is magical and makes me feel like I am a student at Hogwarts).⠀
