How to Deal with High Triglyceride Levels

Often when we discuss cholesterol, the conversation is centered around HDL and LDL cholesterol (good vs. bad). But by focusing on only these two types of cholesterol, we are missing pieces of our health puzzle.
Triglycerides are another type of fat in the blood that can either be used as energy or stored as fat in the body as needed.

Problems begin to arise when triglyceride levels are high and HDL cholesterol levels are low as this can contribute to heart disease. The effects are similar to having high LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol.
Some people are genetically predisposed to higher triglyceride levels, but for the majority, lifestyle factors play a big role.

Lifestyle habits that can help improve triglyceride levels include maintaining a healthy weight, more specifically reducing the amount of fat in the abdominal region. Fat around the abdomen is often a sign of higher triglyceride levels as the body is storing the higher levels around the abdomen. The American Heart Association recommends losing five to 10 percent of excess body fat to reduce triglyceride levels.

Dietary changes are also helpful in reducing triglyceride levels. This means reducing your intake of dietary fats, carbohydrates, and alcohol. There is a strong link between higher body weight and excess consumption of carbohydrates, especially with processed carbs.

Saturated and trans fats are the biggest culprits to higher LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Trans fats are often found in processed and refined products and saturated fat is high in red meats and animal byproducts. Reduce your intake of processed meat such as bacon and deli meats and remove as much fat as possible from your meat.
Saturated fats are also largely found in high-fat dairy products, therefore, using lower fat options is recommended.

It's important that you also choose healthier fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat. These types of fats can be found in nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocados.
Increasing your physical activity is also beneficial in maintaining weight and reducing fat around the abdomen along with improving triglyceride levels.

Silent Inflammation is your heart's biggest enemy. Silent Inflammation is inflammation below the perception of pain. It is very dangerous because as there is no pain you don't do anything about it.
This type of inflammation can attack your organs and every cell in your organs for years, sometimes decades, until there is enough organ damage to be called chronic disease.
When this inflammation attacks your arteries, it weakens arteries and lays the foundation for plaque formation.

But how do you know if you have Silent Inflammation?

To be absolutely sure, you should do a blood test to check for CRP (C-reactive protein).

Another way is to take a non-invasive test on a Digital Pulse Analyzer (DPA). The DPA is a Health Canada approved medical device and is operated in Calgary by http://bit.ly/2zOQZ5u

C-reactive protein is a critical component of our immune system. It was previously used to detect acute causes of inflammation like arthritis, respiratory tract infections, etc. But now CRP is being used to detect lower levels of inflammation (Silent Inflammation) like that which leads to heart disease.

However, CRP has nothing to do with bad cholesterol. They are both exclusive of each other.

As far as your heart health is concerned, the best scenario is to have low cholesterol and low CRP levels.

The question is, how does one remove something like Silent Inflammation that has no signs or symptoms? Where does one start? And how does one know when the Silent Inflammation has been removed? All good questions.

Our bodies are constantly exposed to inflammation triggers – stress, pollution, and infection.

The saturated fats, sugars, salts, and processed foods from the diet we North Americans consume build up in the body and wreak havoc on the cells and can lead to chronic inflammation.

The simple act of being exposed to the UV rays of the sun or even severe cold can also cause some sort of inflammation.

So if you want to reduce Silent Inflammation, you have to stop eating your regular diet, stop breathing polluted air, stop watching television, stop going out into the sun, stop this, stop that... the list can be endless. As this is not practical...
