Have you found yourself wondering, “WHY am I always feeling bloated?” 😩

If so, this post is for you.

Bloating is more than just feeling uncomfortable in your favorite jeans - it could be a sign that you have some kind of imbalance ⚖️

The major causes of bloating tend to be from either a gut microbiome perspective or a hormonal perspective. Not only that, but bloating can mean different things to different people.

My mission is to figure out what bloating means to YOU and understand how you’re experiencing it so we can get to the root cause. For example…

🔹 If you’re experiencing bloating every day;
🔹 If you notice you have a distended abdomen;
🔹 If you’re dealing with diarrhea or constipation;

These are usually signs that you have some kind of GUT MICROBIOME imbalance.

However, if you notice bloating around the time of your period, along with other PMS symptoms such as:

🔸 Breast tenderness
🔸 Acne
🔸 Mood changes, and
🔸 Diahrrea or constipation

You could have an underlying HORMONAL imbalance.

The answer lies in comprehensive testing 🧪

This is how we can begin to target your symptoms with therapies and ultimately get rid of the bloating for good 👊

Why were you first prescribed the birth control pill?
… prevent babies?

It seems like an obvious answer (esp. To a man)

But, I'm willing to bet you answered somthing along the lines of…
..acne
..heavy periods
..indescribable pain during your period

The pill does a great job masking symptoms, but it doesn't actually deal with the underlying issue you're having or the cause of it.

Coming off the pill most women will start to have these symptoms again, sometimes worse than what they were experiencing before they went on the pill.

If you were put on the pill for an off label reason and now your worried about what will happen when you stop taking the pill I can help with that.

I help people transition off the pill and make sure their original symptoms are taken care of for good so the only reason you would ever need to think about using birth control again is for the real purpose, of preventing pregnancy.

Hot flashes getting you down? 🥵⠀

If so, you’re definitely not alone. Menopause can cause symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and changes in weight; and if your mother or grandmother experienced intense symptoms in menopause, you may experience them as well. ⠀

So, what actually happens during menopause? ⬇️⠀

Menopause is a natural process that our bodies go through once we have depleted our ovarian reserve - meaning, we have no eggs left! ⠀

Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are our main s*x hormones which fluctuate throughout the month when we menstruate. Once we stop menstruating, these hormones decrease substantially because our ovaries are no longer producing them. With this, some women can experience some pretty intense side effects.⠀

What are the first steps to feeling more "normal"? ⬇️⠀

Start by getting back to the basics:⠀

🥗 Eat a well rounded diet rich in vegetables and fruits⠀

🏃‍♀️ Exercise regularly ⠀

🧘 Practice stress mitigation techniques⠀

Are you feeling like you need more support as you go through menopause? I can help! 💙⠀

Do you think you might have a hormone imbalance? 🧐⠀

If so, STOP SCROLLING ✋⠀

Here are 4️⃣ symptoms of hormone imbalances you shouldn’t ignore:⠀

1️⃣ Acne on your chin and cheeks - This could be a sign of high testosterone, which causes both oily skin and excess sebum. ⠀

2️⃣ Hair loss - If it happens right after you’ve stopped taking a birth control pill, this could be a sign of Post Oral Contraceptive Syndrome. Potential thyroid issues should be investigated as well. ⠀

3️⃣ Painful and heavy periods - This could be a sign of estrogen or progesterone imbalances - specifically, your estrogen levels might be much higher than your progesterone levels, causing a thick uterine lining to develop. ⠀

4️⃣ Light or missed periods - This also happens when you come off the oral birth control pill, but it could also be a sign of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). ⠀

So, what should you do if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms?⠀

Two words: Comprehensive testing 🧪✨⠀

Once we uncover the root cause of your symptoms, we can come up with an effective plan to get you back to feeling your best self 💙⠀

Are you considering using Accutane for your acne, but are worried about the side effects? 💊🤔⠀

Let’s talk about that 👀⬇️⠀

Accutane is a prescription medication that clears up acne by giving your body a high dose of vitamin A. These levels of vitamin A can be very hard on your liver, and because of this, your liver function will need to be frequently monitored throughout your treatment. Not only that, but Accutane can cause very dry skin AND it’s fetotoxic (meaning, it can potentially cause degenerative effects in a developing fetus or embryo). For this reason, it’s important to be on some form of birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking Accutane.⠀

So, are there effective alternatives to Accutane? 👀⬇️⠀

YES ✨ as a Naturopath, I look inside the body to determine what might be causing the acne. Some of the main reasons for acne are:⠀

🔸 Hormonal imbalances⠀

🔸 GI dysbiosis⠀

🔸 Blood sugar dysregulation⠀

🔸 Diet⠀

Once we’ve discovered the root cause of your acne, we can use targeted supplementation and diet and lifestyle modifications to help your skin heal. ⠀

It is entirely possible to have clear skin WITHOUT Accutane 💙⠀

So - you want to have a baby but you still need to come off the birth control pill.

Let’s talk about that 🗣

When trying to get pregnant, it’s generally recommended to come off of the birth control pill for 6 months to a year before starting to try. This is because it can take that long for your period to actually regulate.

Ultimately, you want to have regular menstrual cycles in order to understand when your ovulation time is and when you should be s*xually active with your partner in order to conceive 🗓

So, how can you help balance your hormones to speed up the process? 👀👇

Luckily, there is different testing we can look at throughout your menstrual cycle to understand exactly what’s going on with your hormones, including which hormones your brain is telling your ovaries to produce and how much of those hormones you’re actually producing 🧠

1️⃣ First, we can look at testing on day three of your menstrual cycle (with day one being your first day of bleeding) in order to test both your luteinizing hormone levels and follicle-stimulating hormones that are secreted from your brain. These hormones help us understand HOW your body is preparing to ovulate. They’re also really important in order to produce a viable egg.

2️⃣ Second, we generally look at testing on day 21 of your menstrual cycle to look at your progesterone levels. This is because progesterone is absolutely VITAL to build your uterine lining in order for an egg to implant properly AND have the resources it needs to support a healthy pregnancy 🤰🏻🤰🏼🤰🏾

Hormonal acne 😩

It can be a constant reminder that something is off with your body… but what? 👀

Whenever I work with a patient with acne, my first course of action is always: 1) a comprehensive intake, and 2) testing. I want to understand which imbalances in the body are leading to this surface presentation of acne.

This allows us to look at:

🔹 Where is acne coming up? For example, is it on your chin and cheeks, forehead, or back and chest?

🔹 When do you get acne?

🔹 Is it cyclical in nature?

🔹 Are there triggers to your acne?

Many times, testing reveals either:

1️⃣ A hormonal imbalance. Most often, estrogen dominance, especially when you're experiencing acne right before your period.

2️⃣ Too many androgens (testosterone in women). While testosterone is really important for us to have motivation and build muscle, too much can give us acne in the chin/cheek region.

Once we understand what’s happening in the body, then we can start to get really targeted with treatment 🎯

It’s no secret that what you eat impacts your overall health, but does diet REALLY have that big of an effect on your hormones? 🥗

The short answer? YES.

Not only does the food you eat create the building blocks of your hormones, but it can also affect how your body detoxifies those hormones as well. If you don’t get the proper nutrition to support hormone production and/or detoxify those hormones properly, you could wind up with a hormonal imbalance.

Symptoms of a hormonal imbalance include:

🔹 Breast tenderness
🔹 Mood swings
🔹 Acne
🔹 Hair loss
🔹 Weight gain

Not only that but consuming too many processed, prepackaged foods can disrupt your hormones as well 🍟

So, what should you eat to keep your hormones happy? 🤔

Trying to get pregnant can be one of the most exciting times of your life… but what happens when months go by without a positive pregnancy test?

When patients are having difficulty conceiving, we tend to categorize infertility as ⬇️

🔹 Women with a regular menstrual cycle who’ve been trying for 6 months and haven't conceived.

So, how can a Naturopath help? 🌱

When looking at infertility through a holistic or naturopathic perspective, our goal is to promote fertility by making sure you’re getting all the necessary nutrients you need to conceive and support a healthy pregnancy. We also perform a deep dive into different testing parameters to understand how your hormones are being secreted throughout your menstrual cycle, as well as the different hormones that could be causing your body not to ovulate.

For example, I generally look at prolactin levels and blood sugar dysregulation to see if there’s any imbalance within those hormones that could be affecting fertility. I also take a look at progesterone levels on day 21 of your cycle to make sure that you’re getting that rise in progesterone that’s so important for fertility 📈

By uncovering the underlying reasons why you’re not getting pregnant, we can start to target them - and ultimately make your dream of growing your family a reality 🧑‍🍼✨

You’re not alone in this journey - let’s tackle infertility at its source 💙
