A cognitive distortion is an exaggerated pattern of thought that’s not based on facts, which can lead us to view things more negatively than they really are.

Cognitive distortions convince your mind to believe negative things about yourself and your world that are not necessarily true.

Everyone experiences cognitive distortions at times. But if you engage in them frequently, your mental health may suffer. If you learn to identify cognitive distortions you can work towards reframing your thoughts.

The opposite action skill is a deliberate attempt to act opposite of your emotional action urge.

Opposite action works best when your emotions don’t fit the facts of a current situation. This means that your emotion, its intensity, and its duration is not effective in helping you in the short term or long term.
